Kali ini datang dari mahasiswa Departemen Fisika, yaitu Elysa Nensy Irawan dan Aldo Mahendra Putra, yang berhasil meraih Gold Prize dalam ajang The ASEAN Thermoelectric Device Fabrication and Invention Fair, awal Agustus 2018 lalu di Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University, Thailand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Elysa Nensy Irawan, Ketua Tim dari Departemen Fisika ITS menjelaskan, kegiatan ini adalah kompetisi yang diselenggarakan oleh Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University, Thailand. Dalam kompetisi tersebut, mahasiswa peserta yang terdiri dari berbagai jurusan di ASEAN dilombakan untuk melakukan fabrikasi termoelektrik sehingga menghasilkan daya paling besar.<\/p>\n<p>Kompetisi ini terbagi ke dalam dua kategori lomba, yakni fabrikasi termoelektrik yang terbuka bagi mahasiswa di negara kawasan ASEAN dan pameran karya penerapan termoelektrik dalam kehidupan sehari-hari untuk semua pelajar SMA di ASEAN. Kompetisi ini juga diikuti sebanyak 70 tim dari beberapa negara di ASEAN. Di antaranya dari Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos dan tuan rumah sendiri Thailand. Satu tim terdiri dari dua hingga tiga anggota. ITS sendiri mengirimkan dua delegasi dalam kompetisi tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Pada proses perlombaannya, mahasiswi yang akrab disapa Nensy tersebut menjelaskan, setiap tim diberikan komponen untuk menyusun modul termoelektrik. Komponen-komponennya terdiri dari alumina, kabel, termoelemen, dan tembaga secara terpisah. \u201cSerta diberikan waktu sebanyak satu jam untuk menyelesaikan proses fabrikasi sehingga komponen-komponen tersebut menjadi sebuah modul termoelektrik seperti yang dijual di pasaran,\u201d imbuhnya.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam melakukan fabrikasi, menurut Nensy, setiap tim diberikan kebebasan untuk mengembangkan kreativitas mereka untuk menentukan bagaimana desain, p-n junction (tipe material semikonduktor), dan packaging dari termoelektrik yang akan dibuat. Setelah itu, dewan juri akan melakukan pengujian terhadap daya dari masing-masing thermoelektrik yang telah dibuat oleh masing-masing tim untuk menentukan pemenang dari kompetisi ini. \u201cTim kami berhasil menjuarai lomba karena berhasil merakit dan membuat modul termoelektrik dengan tegangan paling tinggi,\u201d ungkap Nensy.<\/p>\n<p>Nensy menceritakan, perjuangan timnya dalam memenangkan kompetisi bergengsi tersebut bukan tanpa halangan.<br \/>\nTim mereka terkendala oleh bahasa yang digunakan ketika lomba yaitu menggunakan bahasa Thailand. Namun hal itu dapat teratasi setelah salah satu profesor dari perguruan tinggi Thailand tersebut meminta panitia untuk memakai bahasa Inggris. Itu pun waktu tersisa tinggal 30 menit. \u201cTapi dengan segala usaha keras, alhamdulillah tim kami berhasil menang,\u201d tutur mahasiswi berjilbab itu.<\/p>\n<p>Dihubungi melalui telepon, Nensy yang masih berada di Thailand menjelaskan, termoelektrik merupakan sebuah piranti elektronik yang dapat mengubah perbedaan suhu menjadi energi listrik, ataupun sebaliknya. Perangkat modul termoelektrik yang dijual biasanya berbentuk plat tipis. Salah satu termoeletrik yang dapat dengan mudah kita dapatkan berukuran 40 mm x 40 mm dengan ketebalan 3 mm dan terdapat dua buah kabel (biasanya merah dan hitam).<\/p>\n<p>Jika dibandingkan dengan teknologi refrigerasi kompresi uap, termoelektrik memiliki berbagai macam kelebihan. Antara lain pemanas atau pendingin dapat dengan mudah diatur dengan menyesuaikan arah arusnya, sangat ringkas, tidak berisik, tidak butuh perawatan khusus, dan tidak butuh refrigeran (freon). \u201cDengan demikian, termoelektrik memiliki potensi yang sangat besar sebagai energi alternatif di masa depan,\u201d ujar Nensy menjelaskan teknologi ini yang dikutipnya dari modul yang telah ia pelajari.
