Melalui Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa Penelitian Eksakta (PKM-PE), mahasiswa Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya pun berinovasi dengan mengolah limbah tetes tebu (molases) menjadi energi alternatif terbaru.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seperti diketahui, kebutuhan energi listrik di Indonesia semakin meningkat setiap tahunnya. Diperkirakan, cadangan minyak bumi tanpa adanya eksploitasi baru, hanya mampu bertahan selama 21 tahun mendatang. Artinya, dibutuhkan inovasi energi alternatif terbaru untuk dapat mengatasi masalah keterbatasan minyak ini.<\/p>\n<p>Atas dasar inilah, tiga mahasiswa dari Departemen Teknik Kimia ITS yaitu Martiana Nugraeny, Tri Wahyuning Eka Purnama Sari, dan Chandra Adiwijaya membuat energi terbaru dari limbah molases dan limbah logam berat. Limbah molases ini diolah dengan reaktor dual chamber Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) sistem resirkulasi kontinyu agar dapat menghasilkan energi.<\/p>\n<p>Tri Wahyuning Eka Purnama Sari menjelaskan, pemanfaatan limbah molases di Indonesia masih sangat kurang. Ia mengatakan, tiap hektare lahan tebu mampu menghasilkan molases sebanyak 10 \u2013 15 ton. Limbah yang berasal dari olahan tebu ini memiliki kandungan selulosa yang tinggi. \u201cSelulosa merupakan sumber biomassa terbarukan,\u201d ungkapnya.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34335\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34335\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34335 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-24-at-10.50.34-1-e1532415545341.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-24-at-10.50.34-1-e1532415545341.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-24-at-10.50.34-1-e1532415545341-300x183.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-24-at-10.50.34-1-e1532415545341-355x216.jpeg 355w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laboratorim ini menjadi tempat di mana penelitian mengenai renewable energy dari tetes tebu dilangsungkan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mahasiswi asal Bojonegoro ini menjelaskan pula perihal bahaya limbah bahan beracun dan berbahaya (B3) seperti krom. Logam berat krom sering dijumpai di lingkungan akibat penggunaan bahan kimia di industri. \u201cKrom merupakan limbah B3 dengan daya racun tinggi yang dapat membahayakan kesehatan manusia,\u201d terang mahasiswi yang biasa disapa Tri ini.<\/p>\n<p>Melihat kedua masalah yang ada, Tri dan rekan-rekannya menawarkan sebuah inovasi ide MFCs sistem resirkulasi kontinyu sebagai solusi. \u201cMFCs merupakan fuel cell berbasis biologi yang mengubah energi kimia menjadi energi listrik dengan bantuan reaksi katalitik mikroorganisme,\u201d papar Tri lagi.<\/p>\n<p>Teknologi yang digunakan ini, menurut Tri, memanfaatkan limbah molases dan limbah logam berat sebagai sumber energi alternatif. MFCs ini terdiri dari dua tabung pengembang (chamber) yaitu anoda dan katoda. Dalam chamber anoda, diisi dengan limbah molases dan bakteri. \u201cSedangkan pada chamber katoda diisi dengan limbah logam berat Cr6+,\u201d imbuh mahasiswi murah senyum ini.<\/p>\n<p>Ia menjelaskan, metabolisme yang terjadi pada chamber anoda akan menghasilkan listrik. \u201cSelain menghasilkan listrik, MFCs ini juga dapat mereduksi limbah logam Cr (VI) serta mengurangi nilai BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand, red) pada limbah molases,\u201d pungkas Tri.
