Hasil pembakaran batu bara ini biasanya ditimbun di suatu area industri PLTU dan tidak dimanfaatkan secara maksimal. Apalagi abu dasar termasuk limbah B3 (Bahan Beracun dan Berbahaya), yang tentunya menimbulkan bahaya yang serius bagi lingkungan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Terkait hal tersebut, tiga mahasiswa dari Departemen Kimia Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya berhasil memanfaatkan limbah abu dasar sebagai material pemurni biogas yang ramah lingkungan. Ketiga mahasiswa tersebut adalah Pradena Bhesari Fitrah Laharto, Aristin Putri Kusuma Anggraini, dan Umirul Solichah Fauzany. Sedang pencetus ide dan pengarah utuk karya ini adalah mahasiswa pascasarjana Kimia, Randy Yusuf Kurniawan di bawah bimbingan Ir Endang Purwanti Setya N MT.<\/p>\n<p>Menurut tim, biogas mengandung gas metana murni, sementara gas metana di alam bercampur dengan gas pengotor. Silika tersebut dibentuk menjadi mesopori dan diteliti memiliki kemampuan untuk mengadsorpsi gas metana dari pengotor seperti karbondioksida dan asam sulfida. \u201cMesopori merupakan material padatan berpori yang memiliki ukuran meso, yakni 2 sampai 50 nanometer,\u201d papar Randy lebih lanjut.<\/p>\n<p>Ketua tim, Pradena Bhesari Fitrah Laharto menambahkan, silika mesopori masih belum cukup untuk meningkatkan daya adsorpsi gas metana. Perlu penambahan zat kimia polietilen glikol (PEG) 4000. Angka 4000 menunjukkan massa molekul PEG yang memiliki sifat kekentalan yang rendah, sehingga ketika diimpregnasi dengan mesopori, maka porinya tidak tertutup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJika pori tersebut terbuka, maka adsorpsi gas metana menjadi lebih mudah dan molekul gas lain akan tertahan, sehingga didapatkan metana murni\u201d tuturnya. Sehingga biaya pembelian biogas oleh masyarakat tidak begitu mahal.<\/p>\n<p>Tim ini berharap bisa membawa karyanya turut bertarung di ajang Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional (Pimnas) di Yogyakarta, akhir Agustus mendatang. Di dalam ajang kompetisi bidang penelitian ini, diharapkan juga karya mereka mampu menjadi juara nantinya.
