Dalam komposisinya, baterai memiliki elektrolit (zat kimia) yang berbahaya bagi lingkungan, seperti lithium dan timbal. Terlebih, jika zat tersebut bereaksi akan menimbulkan ledakan dan keracunan pada tubuh.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beranjak dari kondisi tersebut, tiga mahasiswa dari Departemen Kimia, Fakultas Ilmu Alam (FIA), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya berhasil memanfaatkan sari buah tomat sebagai pengganti zat kimia berbahaya pada baterai. Ketiganya yakni Febrilia Agar Pramesti, Abduh Muharram Chairacita, dan Putri Augista Nur Azizah. Sedang pencetus ide dan pengarah dari karya inovasi tersebut adalah mahasiswa pascasarjana Kimia, Randy Yusuf Kurniawan, di bawah bimbingan dosen Ir Endang Purwanti Setya N MT.<\/p>\n<p>Menurut Randy, buah tomat dianggap tim sebagai buah berasa asam yang sangat mudah dijumpai di wilayah tropis seperti Indonesia. Selain harganya yang relatif murah di pasaran, buah tomat juga digemari masyarakat. Lain halnya, dengan buah berasa asam seperti lemon, jeruk, dan kedondong yang harganya relatif mahal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuah tomat berasa asam tersebut diukur keasamannya melalui kadar vitamin C dan menghasilkan 10-40 miligram vitamin C per 100 gram tomat,\u201d jelasnya. Penambahan agarose mampu meningkatkan densitas atau kerapatan elektrolit. \u201cRapatnya elektrolit membuat nilai tegangan listrik menjadi tinggi\u201d, sambung mahasiswa asal Surabaya itu.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam penelitiannya, menurut Febrilia Agar Pramesti, tegangan listrik yang dihasilkan dan diperoleh yakni 1 volt dengan memberikan perlakuan melalui perbandingan volume sari tomat dan agarose encer sebesar 1:2. \u201cUntuk agarose encer sendiri dibuat dengan melarutkan biopolimer agarose ke dalam air dengan perbandingan volume 1:3,\u201d tutur mahasiswa yang akrab disapa Febri itu.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34034\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34034\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34034 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-07-at-14.25.14.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-07-at-14.25.14.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-07-at-14.25.14-300x164.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.its.ac.id\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-07-at-14.25.14-355x194.jpeg 355w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rangkaian baterai dari gel sari buah tomat yang diuji oleh tim mahasiswa dari Departemen Kimia ITS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Febri juga menjelaskan bahwa nilai tegangan 1 volt yang dihasilkan itu hanya dalam skala kecil. \u201cBisa jadi jika dilakukan <em>scale up<\/em> atau pembesaran skala volume, tegangan listrik pada baterai gel ini akan lebih besar\u201d, ungkap mahasiswa semester tujuh yang juga bertindak sebagai ketua tim itu.<\/p>\n<p>Tak hanya itu, lanjut Febri, baterai gel dari buah tomat ini juga dinilai tim mampu menghasilkan tegangan dan arus yang sangat stabil. \u201cKami menjalankan baterai selama 30 menit, tegangannya menjadi 0,985 volt, hanya selisih 0,015 volt saja, selisih ini sangat sulit diperoleh pada penelitian baterai umumnya,\u201d beber Febri.<\/p>\n<p>Melalui inovasi ini pun, tim berharap baterai gel dari buah tomat ini bisa digunakan oleh masyarakat sebagai baterai yang ramah lingkungan, serta mampu mengantarkan timnya untuk lolos bertarung di ajang Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional (Pimnas) ke-31 yang bakal digelar bulan Agustus mendatang di Yogyakarta.
