Terlebih, jika limbah tersebut mengandung logam berat seperti Kromium 6. Beranjak dari kondisi itu, tiga mahasiswa dari Departemen Kimia Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya berhasil mengubah logam Kromium 6 menjadi logam yang lebih ramah lingkungan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ketiga mahasiswa tersebut ialah Wulan Aulia, Rahadian Abdul Rachman dan Ulva Tri Ita Martia. Menurut Wulan Aulia selaku ketua tim, penggunaan logam kromium saat ini banyak digunakan dalam industri elektroplating untuk menghindari terjadinya korosi. Banyaknya penggunaan logam kromium ini lantas akan berdampak buruk jika limbahnya tidak diolah dengan baik. \u201cDampaknya seperti menyebabkan mutagen pada manusia serta proses pertumbuhan tanaman di sekitar pembuangan limbah akan terhambat,\u201d jelasnya.<\/p>\n<p>Oleh karenanya, lanjut Wulan, agar limbah dari logam kromium 6 tidak lagi berbahaya, timnya mereduksinya menjadi logam kromium 3 dengan sistem <em>Microbial Fuel Cell<\/em>(MFC). \u201cPrinsip kerjanya yaitu logam kromium direduksi terlebih dahulu kemudian dilakukan absorbsi,\u201d paparnya lebih lanjut.<\/p>\n<p>Pereduksian menjadi logam kromium 3, kata Wulan, dinilai memiliki toksisitas yang lebih rendah jika dibandingkan dengan kromium 6. Sedangkan untuk ukurannya sendiri, kromium 3 memiliki ukuran molekul yang lebih kecil. \u201cUkuran molekul yang kecil ini akan membantu pada proses penyerapan saat limbah kromium 6 tidak dapat tereduksi,\u201d ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam hal ini, imbuh Wulan, timnya menggunakan material adsorbsi Zeolit Y untuk menyerap limbah dari logam kromium 6 yang tak tereduksi. \u201cPermukaan sisi aktif dari Zeolit Y yang luas akan meningkatkan kinerja dari penyerapan limbah logam kromium 6,\u201d terangnya lagi.<\/p>\n<p>Mekanismenya dimulai dari menambahkan sumber bakteri <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/em> pada kutub anoda sistem reaktor. Kemudian, elektron yang dihasilkan akan bergerak menuju kutub katoda. \u201cPada kutub katoda ini, limbah kromium 6 yang terkumpul akan diserap oleh Zeolit Y,\u201d tuturnya.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam prosesnya, ungkap Wulan, variasi waktu penyerapan dilakukan setiap selang 15 menit hingga dua jam. Di setiap menitnya, dilakukan pengukuran kadar logam kromium yang telah terserap oleh Zeolit Y.<\/p>\n<p>Mahasiswa asal Madiun ini menambahkan, jika penelitiannya tidak hanya diperuntukkan logam kromium. \u201cReduksi juga bisa dilakukan untuk logam yang memiliki toksisitas tinggi seperti timbal (Pb) dan merkuri (Hg),\u201d bebernya.<\/p>\n<p>Melalui inovasi ini pun, Wulan bersama timnya berharap bisa mengantarkannya untuk meraih medali emas pada Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional (Pimnas) yang bakal digelar pada bulan Agustus mendatang.
