Alat yang dikembangkan oleh Agus Muhamad Hatta ST MSi PhD bersama Laboratorium Rekayasa Fotonika Departemen Teknik Fisika ITS ini, merupakan sensor yang mampu mendeteksi ragam pernafasan dengan menggunakan serat optik sebagai bahan utama.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dijelaskan dosen yang kerap disapa Hatta ini, serat optik adalah saluran transmisi sejenis kabel yang terbuat dari kaca atau plastik. Alat ini sangat halus, diameternya kurang lebih 120 mikrometer, ukurannya lebih tipis dari sehelai rambut. Kabel tipis ini dapat digunakan untuk menghantarkan sinyal cahaya dari suatu tempat ke tempat lain. Sumber cahaya yang digunakan biasanya adalah laser atau Light-Emitting Diode (LED).<\/p>\n<p>Cahaya yang ada di dalam serat optik juga tidak akan keluar karena indeks bias dari kaca lebih besar daripada indeks bias dari udara, sehingga kecepatan transmisi serat optik sangat tinggi. Bahan serat satu ini sangat bagus untuk digunakan sebagai saluran komunikasi. Serat optik ini diletakkan dalam masker oksigen yang terhubung dengan Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). \u201cKarena penggunaan serat optik sebagai sensor, Senapas dapat mengukur kualitas pernapasan secara langsung dari masker oksigen yang dikenakan ke monitor display,\u201d papar ketua departemen Teknik Fisika ini.<\/p>\n<p>Hatta mengungkapkan, serat optik dipilih sebagai sensor karena ringan, kecil, dan praktis. Bentuknya yang kecil membuat Senapas dapat digunakan kapan pun dan di mana pun. Selain itu, sifat serat optik juga kebal terhadap medan elektromagnetik, sehingga aman digunakan di lingkungan Magnetic Imaging Resonance (MRI).<\/p>\n<p>Hatta mengatakan, di Indonesia sendiri terdapat produk pendeteksi pernapasan yang sejenis tetapi masih analog. Bahan yang digunakan juga menggunakan elektroda sebagai sensor, sehingga kurang baik jika digunakan dalam medan beradiasi seperti MRI. \u201dUkuran alatnya juga masih besar. Di sini, saya dan tim hanya ingin menawarkan solusi atas masalah tersebut,\u201d tuturnya.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk menunjang penelitiannya, Hatta bekerjasama dengan beberapa pihak seperti medis untuk menguji kelayakan alat ini. Secara teknis, alat ini sudah bekerja dengan baik. Hatta biasa mengujikan kepada mahasiswa terlebih dahulu. \u201cIbarat satu sampai sepuluh. Alat ini sudah mencapai angka tujuh,\u201d lanjutnya.<\/p>\n<p>Pria berkulit putih ini mengatakan, Senapas hanya butuh sedikit pembenahan dari segi kemasan. Ia juga mengaku mendapat kendala untuk mendapatkan komponen karena minimnya industri elektronika di Indonesia. Ia berharap, alat ini bisa dikomersilkan secara bebas meskipun nilai jual alat ini cukup mahal. \u201cSistem penampil datanya yang cukup mahal. Untuk masker oksigennya murah, sekali pakai buang,\u201d aku Hatta.<\/p>\n<p>Di akhir, Hatta menerangkan bahwa alat deteksi pernapasan itu penting adanya. Tidak hanya untuk analisis kedokteran, tetapi juga analisis psikologi, atau ketahanan pekerja di dunia industri. \u00a0\u201cDalam industri pertambangan contohnya, kondisi penambang yang ada di bawah tanah bisa diamati dengan alat deteksi pernapasan ini secara langsung. Mendeteksi kondisi kebugaran atlet, atau kasus-kasus lain,\u201d terang Hatta mengakiri.
