Sedangkan di daerah padat penduduk rata-rata warga mengonsumsi 36 liter air bersih perhari untuk keperluan air penyiraman <em>(flushing)<\/em> toilet. Berlatar alasan itulah, Arief bersama Kiki dan Hita menggangas inovasi bernama Multifunctional Toilet Wastafel (M-Tow). \u00e2\u20ac\u009dM-Tow adalah sistem saluran air dari wastafel untuk <em>flushing<\/em> toilet, lengkap dengan filternya,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d ujar Arief.<\/p>\n<p>Dikatakan Arief, M-Tow pada dasarnya adalah inovasi pemanfaatan kembali air buangan wastafel untuk pengganti <em>flushing<\/em> toilet. Desainnya cukup sederhana, hanya berupa sistem saluran air dari wastafel yang terhubung langsung dengan saluran toilet. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Dengan menggabungkan kedua sistem tersebut, sebanyak 360 liter air bersih dapat dihemat setiap bulannya,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d tutur mahasiswa angkatan 2009 ini.<\/p>\n<p>Sebenarnya konsep menggabungkan fungsi antara toilet dan wastafel bukanlah hal baru. Pasalnya, teknologi serupa sudah diterapkan di Jepang untuk toilet duduk. Arief mengatakan, berbeda dengan Jepang yang mengalirkan air wastafel langsung ke toilet, M-Tow memiliki inovasi tambahan berupa sistem filtrasi atau penyaringan pada bak penampung air. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sebelum digunakan untuk <em>flushing<\/em>, air dari wastafel terlebih dulu disaring menggunakan filter,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d jelasnya.<\/p>\n<p>Penyaringan tersebut diperlukan untuk alasan kebersihan. Melalui filtrasi yang terdiri dari beberapa tahap, kotoran-kotoran seperti sisa-sisa sabun pencuci muka, tangan, maupun pasta gigi bisa tersaring. Hasilnya, penampakan air akan lebih jernih. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Karena hanya digunakan untuk keperluan flushing, sifat fisik ini dinilai sudah cukup memenuhi,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d imbuh mahasiswa asal Jember ini.<\/p>\n<p>Komponen utama M-Tow terdiri dari sebuah katup, wastafel, pipa saluran ke kloset jongkok, dan bak penampung air. \u00e2\u20ac\u009dBerbeda dengan toilet duduk yang sudah dilengkapi sistem <em>flush, <\/em>kloset jongkok didesain sederhana dan tidak memerlukan alat tambahan,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d&nbsp; ujar Arief. Sementara untuk bahan wastafel M-Tow, Arief menggunakan <em>fiberglass<\/em>. Alasannya, <em>fiberglass <\/em>lebih kuat, tidak korosif, serta mudah dibentuk.<\/p>\n<p>Dari segi ekonomi dan lingkungan, kloset inovatif ini memiliki beberapa keunggulan dibandingkan dengan toilet duduk ataupun toilet jongkok dan wastafel. Harga M-Tow terbilang lebih murah yakni 250 ribu rupiah untuk sekali pembuatannya. Di pasaran, harga kloset duduk sekitar 550 ribu rupiah dan kloset jongkok berkisar 55 ribu rupiah hingga 150 ribu rupiah. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Jika kedua jenis kloset itu dikombinasikan dengan wastafel seharga 150 ribu rupiah hingga 250 ribu rupiah, total harganya akan menjadi lebih mahal,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d imbuh Arief.<\/p>\n<p>Keunggulan lainnya, M-Tow bisa menghemat air sebesar 25,3 liter perhari atau setara 360 liter per bulan. Dari sisi lingkungan, toilet inovatif ini dapat mencegah pemborosan air bersih sehingga dapat mencegah terjadinya penggurunan di bumi.
