Sesuai dengan ketentuan International Hidrographic Organisation (IHO), pembaharuan peta laut dilakukan minimal lima tahun sekali. Hal ini dilakukan karena wilayah laut bersifat abstrak dan dinamis, tidak seperti daratan yang dapat dengan mudah ditentukan posisinya.<\/p>\n

Indonesia yang telah menjadi anggota IHO sejak 1951, mau tak mau harus tunduk pada regulasi IHO. Karena itu, pembaharuan peta selalu dilakukan oleh Dinas Hidrografi dan Oseanografi (Dishidros). "Dishidros mempunyai empat tim khusus untuk survey pemetaan laut," terang Kasubdos Survey Dishidros, Rahmad Ibrahim. <\/p>\n

Meski kemampuan staf survey pemetaan laut masih terbatas, peta produksi Dishidros yang bernaung di bawah TNI AL ini telah diakui secara internasional. "Ini karena peta produk kita menggunakan standar IHO," tegas Rahmad. Untuk menjamin keakuratan data pada peta, tiap anggota IHO biasanya saling tukar informasi seputar peta laut negaranya masing-masing. "Sehingga, kita bisa tahu seberapa jauh batas negara Indonesia dan batas negara lain." ujar kolonel laut ini.<\/p>\n

Selain menyangkut batas wilayah negara, pembaharuan peta laut penting sebagai jaminan keselamatan navigasi kapal-kapal di laut. Di sisi lain, sifat dinamis peta laut karena pengaruh perubahan dan kegiatan di lingkungan laut mebuat pembaharuan peta laut harus dilakukan secara kontinyu. <\/p>\n
