Pasalnya, setiap tahun jumlahnya semakin meningkat dan merusak kualitas lingkungan.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Salah satu alternatif yang bisa digunakan adalah metode <em>Subcritical Water Extraction<\/em> (SWE),&quot; ujar Liu.<\/p>\n<p>Digelar di Jurusan Teknik Lingkungan, Kamis (3\/11), Liu menjelaskan bahwa SWE adalah salah satu metode ekstraksi yang cepat tanpa mengurangi nilai efektifitas dari proses pengolahan. Hal ini menunjukkan hasil yang lebih baik dibanding pengolahan konvensional menggunakan metode lahan urug atau <em>landfill<\/em> dan <em>incinerator<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Sayangnya meski begitu masih jarang industri yang mau menerapkannya untuk mengolah limbah sehingga penelitian di bidang ini masih sangat potensial,&quot; tambahnya.<\/p>\n<p>Di sisi lain, tambah Liu, limbah logam berat yang dihasilkan elektronik merupakan logam langka yang dapat dimanfaatkan. Hal ini mendorong inisiatif kepala Departemen Teknik Kimia NTUST ini untuk mendaur ulang limbah logam tersebut menjadi logam berharga.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Dengan SWE kita dapat mengontrol persebaran dan efek racun logam tersebut di lingkungan. Tak hanya itu, metode ini pun ampuh mendaur ulang logam langka tersebut menjadi bermanfaat,&quot; ungkapnya yang mendapat gelar PhD dari Universitas Delaware itu.<\/p>\n<p>Meski belum banyak diterapkan, namun beberapa negara di Asia seperti Jepang dan Taiwan telah mengaplikasikannya ke beberapa industri. Karena tak hanya murah dan aplikatif, metode ini juga tidak menimbulkan efek samping yang justru dapat merusak kualitas lingkungan.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Murah karena kita tidak perlu pelarut dalam pengolahannya. Pelarut ini lah yang biasanya membuat pengeluaran menjadi membengkak,&quot; terangnya gamblang.<\/p>\n<p>Di akhir, Liu menambahkan bahwa untuk mendapatkan logam berharga tak melulu dengan cara menambangnya dari dalam bumi. Mendaur ulang logam tersebut dari limbah yang ada justru akan berdampak lebih baik pada kualitas lingkungan.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Sudah saatnya kita beralih ke metode yang <em>low energy<\/em> dan <em>sustainability<\/em>, salah satunya dengan SWE ini,&quot; pungkas Liu yang juga anggota Asosiasi Air Internasional ini.
