Kedua material itu sering diaplikasikan dalam lampu neon dan layar televisi. Pemulihan material tersebut dari limbah elektronik dapat menggantikan material murninya di alam yang semakin langka.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;Material Y dan Eu pada sampah elektronik dapat dimurnikan kembali menggunakan teknologi <em>subcritical water extraction<\/em> (ekstraksi air subkritik, red),&#8221; tutur guru besar di National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) itu. Pakar pengolahan limbah ini mengaku bahwa penelitian tentang <em>recovery<\/em> kedua material masih kurang.<\/p>\n<p>Ekstraksi menggunakan air subkritik adalah ekstraksi yang menggunakan air pada tekanan dan temperatur tinggi.&nbsp; Temperatur yang digunakan berkisar antara 100 derajat celcius hingga 374 derajat celcius.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;<em>Subcritical water extraction<\/em> memiliki tiga tahap yaitu penyucian asam, ekstraksi pelarut, dan pengapuran<em>,<\/em>&#8221; jelas dosen di Jurusan Teknik Kimia NTUST ini. Liu juga menerangkan bahwa asam sulfat (H<sub>2<\/sub>SO<sub>4<\/sub>) adalah asam yang tepat untuk digunakan dalam penyerapan material Y dan Eu dalam <em>subcritical water extraction<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Guru besar yang meraih gelar doktor di University of Delaware di Amerika Serikat ini mengklaim bahwa <em>subcritical water extraction<\/em> adalah metode ekstraksi yang cepat tanpa mengurangi efektifitas dari pengolahan. Metode ini menunjukkan hasil yang lebih baik dibandingkan pengolahan konvensional menggunakan metode&nbsp;<em>landfill<\/em>&nbsp;(lahan urug, red) dan&nbsp;<em>incinerator<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Pemurnian kembali material Y dan Eu ini menurut Liu sangat penting untuk mengurangi dampak limbah elektronik yang merugikan lingkungan. Logam berat dari peralatan elektronik seperti telepon genggam, komputer, dan televisi yang dibuang sembarangan dapat mengontaminasi air, tanah, dan menimbulkan berbagai penyakit pada manusia.<\/p>\n<p>Lebih parah lagi, tingginya penggunaan barang elektronik di era global menyebabkan laju timbunan sampah logam berat pun semakin meningkat. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan jumlah sampah elektronik saat ini yang mencapai 41.8 juta matrik ton. Angka ini diprediksi akan meningkat menjadi 50 juta pada tahun 2018.
