Bedanya, PHA memiliki kemampuan istimewa untuk menguraikan strukturnya secara alami.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam perhelatan <em>International Postgraduate Conference on Biotechnology<\/em> (IPCB) di ITS sejak Kamis (25\/8) itu, Prof Tjandra Setiadi PhD menerangkan berbagai kemungkinan yang terjadi apabila PHA menggeser kedudukan plastik konvensional.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Keunikan lain dari PHA adalah dapat diproduksi menggunakan bahan dasar limbah organik secara alami atau biologis,&quot; ungkap Tjandra.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam acara yang merupakan hasil kerjasama dari tiga negara yakni Indonesia, Malaysia dan Jepang ini, Tjandra menjelaskan beberapa PHA sudah diproduksi dan bahkan memiliki merek tertentu.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adalah Biopol, Metabolix dan Nodax yang menjadi perintis awal munculnya plastik PHA. &quot;Sama-sama terbuat dari glukosa (gula) namun masing-masing berasal dari spesies yang berbeda,&quot; terang profesor dari Institut Teknologi Bandung tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>PHA menjadi kian kondang sejak <em>Newlight Technology<\/em> dari Amerika dan Holding bv dari Belanda menyepakati bahwa proses pembuatan bioplastik ini menggunakan biokatalis sebagai prosesnya.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Biokatalis berguna untuk mengkonversi gas rumah kaca yang dihasilkan, yakni metana, ke dalam PHA hingga 1,3 juta metrik ton tiap tahunnya. Hal ini menyebabkan biaya produksi PHA menjadi lebih tinggi dari plastik minyak bumi lainnya. &quot;Mahalnya harga PHA disebabkan harga bahan dasarnya yang juga tinggi,&quot; ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Di sisi lain, penggunaan kultur murni PHA juga membutuhkan biaya operasional yang tinggi, khususnya untuk media sterilisasi dan perawatan reaktornya. &quot;Salah satu langkah potensial untuk mereduksi harga adalah dengan menggunakan bahan organik dari agrikultur dan limbah industri makanan yang dikombinasi menjadi agen mikrobial,&quot; lanjut pria yang mengajar di Teknik Bioproses ITB ini.<\/p>\n<p>Lebih lanjut Tjandra menjelaskan salah satu contoh produksi PHA yang telah dikembangkan adalah penggunaan kultur campuran dari lumpur aktif pengolahan limbah industri tapioka. Dari penelitian ini diharapkan PHA berbahan dasar limbah tapioka mampu berfungsi dengan baik. Di sisi lain juga turut mengurangi pencemar yang berasal dari limbah industri tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Masih banyak yang perlu dikaji, terutama pada periode kombinasi aerobik-anaerobik yang digunakan. Ini menjadi tantangan sekaligus peluang dalam pengembangan bioteknologi khususnya plastik PHA,&quot; pungkas Tjandra yang memperoleh gelar doktornya di Inggris.
