Beberapa limbah yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai sumber biogas berasal dari fermentasi sampah organik mulai dari sampah perkotaan hingga limbah makanan.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Ini menjadi tantangan tersendiri bagi dunia bioteknologi, karena berbeda sumber maka berbeda pula mikroorganismenya. Pengembangan penelitiannya sangat banyak,&quot; papar Whang.<\/p>\n<p>Lewat konferensi bertajuk <em>Current Trends in Biotechnological Research for Environmental Sustainability<\/em> ini, Whang mengenalkan dua sistem pengolahan limbah yang mampu menghasilkan biogas dengan baik. Adalah bioreaktor fermentasi hidrogen dan biodiesel berbahan dasar alga yang mampu menjawab tantangan atas kebutuhan biogas di masa mendatang.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Keduanya memiliki efisiensi di atas 90 persen dalam mengolah limbah sekaligus memproduksi biogas,&quot; lanjut pria yang memperoleh gelar doktor di Universitas Wisconsin-Madison ini.<\/p>\n<p>Bioreaktor fermentasi hidrogen menggunakan karbohidrat sebagai sumber energi. Dalam prosesnya, terlihat indikasi korelasi positif antara karbohidrat dengan mekanisme laktat yang menghasilkan biogas sebagai hasil akhirnya.<\/p>\n<p>Berbeda dengan biodiesel berbahan dasar alga yang dapat digunakan untuk mengolah hasil ekstraksi minyak. &quot; Disamping kebutuhan mengolah sisa mikro alga, proses ini pun mampu menghasilkan energi alternatif yang menjanjikan,&quot; beber Whang.<\/p>\n<p>Kedua sistem tersebut sukses diterapkan di Taiwan. Keduanya terbukti mampu mengatasi tingginya pencemaran akibat kenaikan jumlah produksi industri opto-elektronik di Negara Formosa ini. &quot;Kedepannya tentu dibutuhkan lagi pengembangan untuk mendapatkan hasil yang lebih maksimal dari saat ini.
