Pada tahun ini CommTech mengusung tema <em>Ring of Fire, Strands of Sands<\/em>. Tema tersebut menurut Joni, merepresentasikan Indonesia yang terdiri dari gugusan kepulauan. &#8221;Terdapat lebih dari 17 ribu pulau yang tersebar di sepanjang garis khatulistiwa,&#8221; ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Selain itu, ia menuturkan Indonesia juga menjadi negara yang dilalui oleh cincin api. Sehingga banyak gunung berapi dapat ditemui di Indonesia. &#8221;Permasalahannya adalah bagaimana sikap kita dalam menghadapi tantangan dari <em>Ring of Fire<\/em> (cincin api, red) tersebut,&#8221; tuturnya.<\/p>\n<p>Rektor ITS berharap, program yang rutin dijalankan dua kali dalam setahun ini dapat mengundang minat mahasiswa internasional untuk datang ke ITS. &#8221;Saya harap mahasiswa ITS juga dapat bergaul secara internasional,&#8221; tutur Guru Besar Jurusan Teknik Lingkungan ini.<\/p>\n<p>Saat ini, kata Joni, CommTech telah dinobatkan sebagai salah satu program yang baik untuk mahasiswa oleh sebuah majalah global tingkat Asia. &#8221;Hal ini menjadi motivasi tersendiri bagi kami,&#8221; akunya.<\/p>\n<p>CommTech 2016 diikuti oleh 35 peserta dari 13 negara. Mulai dari mahasiswa program sarjana, magister, doktoral, hingga <em>associate professor<\/em>. Mereka datang dari berbagai disiplin ilmu, baik sains dan teknologi maupun sosial humaniora.<\/p>\n<p>Program yang akan berlangsung hingga Rabu (31\/8) ini dibagi menjadi dua grup. Peserta dari grup <em>Ring of Fire<\/em> akan mempelajari mengenai gunung api, dan kaitannya dengan kearifan lokal Indonesia. Sementara peserta dari grup <em>Strands of Sand<\/em> akan mempelajari tentang manajemen area pesisir di Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Tidak hanya di kelas, para peserta juga akan mengunjungi beberapa lokasi untuk memperkuat topik yang dipelajari. Di antaranya adalah Lumpur Lapindo, Kawasan Geologi Candi Trowulan, PT Terminal Teluk Lamong dan Kawasan Mangrove Wonorejo. Tak hanya itu, para peserta juga tetap mendapatkan sentuhan budaya Indonesia dalam program ini, seperti belajar Bahasa Indonesia, belajar tari dan musik tradisional hingga permainan tradisional.
