Bahkan, akibat kelangkaan itu pada 2019 mendatang diperkirakan Negara Indonesia akan menjadi negara pengimpor bahan bakar. &quot;Karena itu, masyarakat pun dituntut untuk mencari sumber energi baru yang tidak berdampak negatif bagi konsumennya serta dapat diperbaharui dan tidak habis,&quot; ungkap Prof Ir Dr Mahyudin Abdul Rachman, selaku pembicara kultam.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Dalam kuliah tamu yang bertajuk <em>Utilization of Waste Vegetable Oil (POME) as Substitute Fuel which Produces Bio-Hydrogen for Electricity, <\/em>Mahyudin&nbsp;menjelaskan bahwa banyak bahan-bahan di alam yang dapat diolah menjadi sumber energi terbarukan. Namun, jika bahan tersebut memiliki fungsi utama sebagai bahan pangan, kita tidak boleh menggunakannya, yang kita gunakan adalah limbah dari bahan tersebut. &quot;Yang penting adalah bagaimana menggunakan limbah ini menjadi sesuatu yang bermanfaat,&quot; ucap pria yang lahir di Ujung Pandang 56 tahun lalu ini.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Menariknya, kelapa sawit yang selama ini dikenal sebagai penghasil minyak untuk industri, limbahnya juga dapat diolah menjadi bahan bakar alternatif. Limbah cair kelapa sawit yang disebut <em>Palm Oil Mill Effluent<\/em> (POME) salah satunya. POME terdiri dari air, serpihan kulit kelapa sawit, dan residu lemak. &quot;Jika limbah ini dikombinasikan dengan mikroba, limbah ini bisa menghasilkan biohidrogen yang dapat digunakan sebagai sumber energi,&quot; jelas lulusan Jurusan Teknik Kimia ITS tahun 1982 ini&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>POME memiliki keunggulan untuk dijadikan sumber energi. Yang pertama, POME mengandung nitrogen dan <em>Phosporus<\/em> yang sangat kaya. Juga memiliki tingkat keasaman yang cukup tinggi hingga memungkinkan mikroba bekerja dengan baik. Selain itu, POME juga tidak membutuhkan aktivator (bentuk logam-logam untuk membantu pengolahan energi, red). &quot;Ini dapat menekan biaya produksi,&quot; lanjut salah satu peneliti di BPPT ini.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Namun, dalam penerapannya, Mahyudin mengaku masih banyak kendala yang menghambat pengembangan sumber energi terbarukan khususnya POME. Pengambangan sumber energi alternatif semacam ini membutuhkan ketersediaan bahan baku yang berkelanjutan. Banyak pihak yang selanjutnya akan ikut terkait dalam masalah ini, seperti petani, dan lain-lain. Bukanlah suatu hal yang mudah untuk mengajak setiap pihak bekerja sama dalam memenuhi tujuan ini.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Selain itu, pengajar yang pernah bekerja di Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) ini juga menyampaikan bahwa Indonesia masih belum memiliki desain teknologi yang pas untuk mengembangkan pengolahan limbah kelapa sawit.
