Energi arus sungai maupun laut selain ramah lingkungan juga mempunyai energi 830 kali lipat lebih besar dibandingkan dengan energi angin. Tak hanya itu, teknologi PLTA pun memiliki biaya investasi yang relatif terjangkau dan dengan teknologi yang sederhana. &quot;Sehingga PLTA lebih mudah diterapkan,&quot; ungkap Andi Ismail, salah satu anggota PKM Penelitian sekaligus PKM Karsa Cipta (KC) ini.<\/p>\n<p>Dilain sisi, menurut Andi persebaran energi listrik di Indonesia juga masih belum berhasil. Misalnya saja masyarakat di Papua dan Nusa Tenggara Timur. Padahal, di daerah tersebut memiliki potensi energi yang dapat dimanfaatkan<br \/>\nseperti aliran sungai pada daerah pedalaman dan arus laut pada kepulauan<br \/>\n terpencil.&quot;Sehingga sangat disayangkan apabila kita tidak memanfaatkan<br \/>\npotensi yang ada,&quot; ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk itulah Andi bersama Zain Amarta, Muhammad Syarifuddin, Ayu Fitriyah Wahyuni dan Riza Rifaldy Argaputra menciptakan turbin helical. Alat tersebut dapat digunakan untuk mengefisiensikan kerja PLTA. &quot;Semakin tinggi efisiensi turbin arus air, maka semakin tinggi energi listrik yang dihasilkan oleh PLTA,&quot; ungkap mahasiswa angkatan 2012 ini.<\/p>\n<p>Pada penelitian ini, Andi dan teman-teman telah mencoba dua metode untuk meningkatkan efisiensi turbin helical. Metode pertama menggunakan penambahan sirip atau<em> fin<\/em>, sedangkan metode kedua menggunakan penambahan <em>ducting <\/em>atau<span class=&quot;st&quot;> media tempat menyalurkan bahan produksi ataupun sisa produksi<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Pengujian pun dilakukan secara eksperimental. Eksperimen turbin helical dengan dua metode tersebut dilakukan di saluran keluaran mata air Umbulan, Pasuruan. Langkah pertama pada tahap ini yaitu dilakukan pengambilan data kecepatan arus pada berbagai titik di saluran keluaran mata air Umbulan. &quot;Setelah didapatkan variasi kecepatan arus, kemudian dilakukan pemasangan dan pengujian turbin,&quot;jelas Andi.<\/p>\n<p>Seluruh bagian turbin yang diuji akan dimasukkan dalam air. Setelah turbin berputar, poros turbin dihubungkan dengan <em>tachometer <\/em>dan t<em>orque wench <\/em>secara bergantian. Data yang diambil ialah jumlah&nbsp;<em>revolution per minute<\/em>&nbsp;(&nbsp;RPM) dan torsi pada kecepatan arus air yang bervariasi.<\/p>\n<p>Nilai RPM didapatkan dari alat ukur<em> tachometer<\/em>, sedangkan nilai torsi didapatkan dari alat ukur <em>torque wench<\/em>. Data RPM dan torsi diolah sehingga didapatkan nilai efisiensi pada kecepatan arus air yang bervariasi. Berdasarkan pengujian yang telah dilakukan, metode penambahan <em>ducting <\/em>jauh lebih efektif daripada penambahan <em>fin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk efisiensi turbin helical ini, Andi dan kawan-kawan telah mendaftarkan karya mereka menjadi dua jenis PKM, yakni PKM P dan KC. Hal ini karena metode penambahan <em>fin<\/em> adalah inisiasi original dari grup ini, sehingga belum terdapat di jurnal penelitian manapun. &quot;Untuk itulah kami mendaftarkan PKM kami menjadi dua jenis,&quot; ujar Abdi.<\/p>\n<p>Melalui penelitian ini, Andi beserta anggota yang lain berharap agar penelitian mereka dapat dikembangkan lebih jauh lagi. Terlebih lagi jika bisa diterapkan di PLTA Indonesia. Menurut Andi, Indonesia punya potensi yang besar di bidang PLTA. &quot;Sehingga penelitian ini diharapkan bisa membantu pengembangan PLTA Indonesia lebih jauh lagi,&quot; pungkasnya.
