Arga Santoso, Ketua IBC menjelaskan, tujuan digelarnya kompetisi ini ialah untuk memberikan fasilitas kepada atlet bulu tangkis agar mereka mampu mengembangkan kemampuannya. Selain itu, Astec ITS Open juga bertujuan untuk mengenalkan bulu tangkis ITS kepada masyarakat luas. "Kita ingin mengenalkan bahwa ITS tak hanya kuat di akademik, tapi juga non akademik," jelasnya.<\/p>\n

Tahun ini, Astec ITS Open 2014 tidak hanya diperuntukkan bagi mahasiswa, tapi juga dibuka untuk umum. Kompetisi ini terbagi dalam lima kategori yang terdiri dari beregu universitas, beregu instansi, tunggal putra, ganda veteran, dan ganda putra. "Untuk beregu universitas dan instansi memainkan semua partai yang ada," jelas Arga.<\/div>\n

Antusiasme peserta terbilang cukup besar, terlihat dari banyaknya jumlah peserta yang berpartisipasi. Terdapat 13 universitas yang turut berpartisipasi di kategori beregu universitas. Sedangkan di kategori beregu instansi terdapat 13 instansi pula. "Masyarakat sangat antusias, bahkan ada yang datang dari luar pulau jawa, seperti Makasar," imbuhnya.<\/div>\n

ITS sebagai tuan rumah tentunya juga mempunyai ambisi tersendiri. Target juara pun telah dicanangkan jauh-jauh hari. Tak tanggung-tanggung, mereka mengirimkan empat tim segaligus untuk berlaga di partai beregu. Dua tim di bertanding di kategori beregu universitas, dan sisanya bertanding di beregu instansi. "Kami telah berlatih rutin, dan kami juga telah latihan intensif selama dua minggu terakhir," ungkap Arga.<\/div>\n

Sementara itu, Muhammad Amirul Ihsan, salah satu peserta dari Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya mengatakan bahwa ia sangat senang bisa ikut dalam pertandingan ini. Menurutnya, kompetisi ini sangat bagus dan sangat bermanfaat bagi atlet badminton di Indonesia. "Kompetisi ini dapat menambah pengalaman tiap pemain.
