Menurutnya, masing-masing UKM bisa membentuk karakter yang berbeda.<\/p>\n<p>Misalnya saja, untuk belajar bahasa tubuh yang bagus, bisa diperoleh dari UKM teater. &#8221;Di UKM ini, mahasiswa juga bisa belajar kemampuan berbicara yang persuasif,&#8221; jelasnya sembari melihat anggota teater yang menunjukkan aneka ekspresi saat mengajak mahasiswa baru bergabung.<\/p>\n<p>Tak hanya itu, kemampuan bicara disertai keberanian&nbsp; juga bisa didapat dari UKM musik. &#8221;Bagian vokal itu <em>kan<\/em> juga bagian melatih bicara,&#8221; tambah Herman lagi. Menurut pria kelahiran Mojokerto ini, kemampuan-kemampuan seperti ini merupakan bentuk komunikasi. Dan kemampuan tersebut tentu dibutuhkan di dunia kerja.<\/p>\n<p>Selain itu, UKM juga bisa menjadi wadah mempersatukan potensi mahasiswa-mahasiswa jurusan. Selama ini jurusan memang diperbolehkan mengadakan perkumpulan serupa untuk menyalurkan hobi. Namun Herman berpendapat, akan lebih baik lagi bila semua melebur menjadi satu di UKM. Dengan demikian, pembinaan lebih mudah dilakukan.<\/p>\n<p>Doktor lulusan Jerman ini mencontohkan olahraga bulutangkis. Salah satu jenis olahraga yang diminati di Indonesia ini memang butuh pembinaan lebih. Bagi mahasiswa yang sebelumnya tidak memiliki <em>background<\/em> di bidang ini, tentunya butuh latihan ekstra. &#8221;Kalau bulutangkis tidak dilatih menjadi satu di UKM, pasti susah,&#8221; ujar Dosen Jurusan Teknik Mesin ini.<\/p>\n<p>Bagi Herman sendiri, UKM harus bisa membuat suatu hal yang menarik dan unik. Contohnya UKM musik. Bila di setiap jurusan ada mahasiswa yang tertarik dengan musik jazz maka UKM musik <em>lah<\/em> yang harus menfasilitasi. Begitu pula bila ada yang tertarik dengan musik unik lainnya.<\/p>\n<p>Hanya saja Herman cukup menyayangkan keterbatasan sarana bagi UKM. Ke depan perlu ada upaya perbaikan fasilitas demi kemajuan UKM yang ada. Sebab, UKM-UKM inilah yang akan mengharumkan nama ITS baik di kancah nasional maupun internasional. Herman juga berharap, UKM juga turut mewarnai Dies Natalis ITS nantinya. &#8221;Sehingga, UKM bisa menghasilkan syiar baik bagi ITS,&#8221; pungkasnya.
