Ia menyebutkan jenis-jenis korosi antara lain, <em>uniform corrosion, bimetal corrosion,<\/em> hingga <em>crevice corrosion<\/em> atau korosi celah.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8221;Uniform corrosion<\/em> merupakan jenis korosi yang paling sering dijumpai,&#8221; ujar Ralph.&nbsp; Korosi ini menurut Ralph, dikontrol oleh reaksi kimia atau elektrokimia antara<br \/>permukaan logam dengan media korosifnya. Akibatnya, terjadi pengurangan berat atau ketebalan logam terjadi merata pada seluruh permukaan logam.<\/p>\n<p>Lain lagi dengan <em>bimetal corrosion.<\/em> Ralp mengatakan, bila dua logam yang berbeda saling kontak dan berada pada media atau larutan yang konduktif dan korosif maka akan timbul beda potensial yang menyebabkan terjadinya aliran arus listrik.<\/p>\n<p>Beda potensial elektrik tersebut merupakan salah satu faktor terpenting yang mempengaruhi korosi bimetal. &#8221;Potensial ini disebut juga Electro Motif Force (EMF). Timbulnya EMF tersebut akibat dari sifat kimia bahan,&#8221; tandasnya. Salah satu upaya pencegahan untuk menanggulangi jenis korosi ini adalah dengan memilih material yang memiliki EMF kecil.<\/p>\n<p>Menurut Ralph, setidaknya terdapat beberapa cara untuk mengidentifikasi laju korosi, diantaranya adalah metode kehilangan berat dan metode elektrokimia. Metode kehilangan berat adalah perhitungan laju korosi dengan mengukur kekurangan berat akibat korosi yang terjadi. <\/p>\n<p>Sedangkan metode elektrokimia dilakukan dengan menggunakan pembanding. Yaitu meletakkan salah satu material bersifat korosif dengan bahan yang akan diuji hingga beda potensial dapat diamati dengan adanya pembanding tersebut.
