Exploration of water sources in Nij Village by the ITS Patriot Expedition Team together with residents<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

South Manokwari, ITS News \u2013<\/span><\/strong> The journey to resolve the clean water problem in Momi Waren District, South Manokwari Regency, West Papua, led the 2026 Patriot Expedition Team from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to explore various water sources and infrastructure in six villages. Beyond simply searching for water sources, the team sought to understand the problem from upstream to downstream, from the condition of the water sources, water catchment structures, piping networks, to the quality of the water used by the community.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For a week, starting on Tuesday (August 18th), the team visited the villages of Demini, Siwi, Nij, Dembek, Gaya Baru, and Waren. The investigation revealed several findings that illustrate the complexity of the clean water problem in the area. Several water sources were found to be quite murky, groundwater discharge reportedly decreased during the dry season, and indications of sand blockages were found in the piping network leading to the Momi Waren Water Treatment Plant (IPA).<\/span><\/p>\n

These findings serve as a reminder that clean water issues don’t always stem from the presence or absence of water sources. Behind the flow of water reaching people’s homes lies a complex system that determines the sustainability of its use.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Head of Team 04 of the 2026 ITS Patriot Expedition, Candida Aulia De Silva Nusantara, ST, MT, emphasized that the survey was conducted to obtain a comprehensive picture of the existing conditions. According to her, every field finding needs to be interpreted as a whole system so that the resulting recommendations truly align with the community’s needs. “This comprehensive picture is important so that the recommendations we formulate are truly based on the real conditions in Momi Waren,” she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The team’s journey began on Tuesday (August 18th) in Demini Village. There, they inspected the existing clean water infrastructure and observed how the community utilizes it. The journey then continued to Siwi Village to explore a water source that could potentially meet the community’s needs. The team not only observed the source but also gathered information on water availability and the condition of the facilities used to access it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following day, Wednesday (August 19), the investigation continued to Nij Village. This time, the scope of observation was expanded to include water catchment structures and piping networks. The team monitored the condition of the water flow and distribution channels while discussing with the community about the use of water resources in daily life. This series of visits revealed one important fact: the potential of a water resource cannot be separated from the readiness of the infrastructure that supports it. An abundant source does not necessarily provide optimal benefits if the capture and distribution systems face challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

The investigation deepened when the team visited the water intake at the Momi Waren IPA in Siwi Village on Friday (August 21st). This point is a crucial part of the water supply system, connecting the water source with the distribution process to the treatment plant. The team was accompanied by Mr. Sam, who explained the condition of the intake, the distribution route, and the water’s journey to the Momi Waren IPA. This information helped the team understand the current system and identify areas requiring further attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

From initial observations, the team found indications of possible sand blockages in the pipeline network. This finding is not yet a final technical conclusion, but it is an important note that requires follow-up because it has the potential to impede the smooth flow of water. For the team, this finding demonstrates that clean water challenges can arise throughout the water’s journey, not just at its source. Therefore, the condition of the pipeline network is a crucial part of the overall system evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Monday (August 24th), the team continued its survey of Dembek, Gaya Baru, and Waren villages. This time, attention was focused on the physical condition of the water sources, the water collection system, and the quality of the water used by the community. The team took several water samples for further examination. Initial observations revealed several sources to be quite cloudy. However, visual turbidity is not a direct basis for concluding that the water is suitable for drinking. This finding serves as an initial indicator that requires further examination to determine the characteristics of the water quality and its treatment requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

Muh Raihan Uwaiz STr, a member of Team 04 of the 2026 ITS Patriot Expedition, explained that each source has different characteristics, so treatment cannot be generalized. “The visual condition of the water cannot immediately lead to conclusions about the water’s suitability. Further examination is required to determine what needs to be tested and the appropriate treatment for each source,” he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the physical quality of the water, the team also obtained information regarding changes in groundwater discharge. Residents reported that discharge tends to decrease during the dry season. This is a concern because wells remain a reliable source of water for daily needs. This adds to the complexity of the clean water issue in Momi Waren. The water supply system must not only meet community needs during normal times but also consider changes in water availability as the seasons change.<\/span><\/p>\n

The diverse findings from the six villages need to be interpreted as a whole. Each location has distinct characteristics and challenges. Some require attention to water sources and facilities, others face issues with the distribution network, while others demonstrate challenges with water quality and the availability of water during the dry season. The team believes that no single solution can be applied uniformly to all villages. Each location has its own unique challenges and characteristics. Therefore, the recommendations developed must address the needs of each region while considering the long-term sustainability of the system.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the team members, Nabila Augesita Putri ST, stated that location context is crucial in developing recommendations. Spatial records of water sources, facilities, pipelines, and residential areas are necessary. “This way, the recommendations we develop will reflect the spatial and field conditions we actually encountered,” she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

This approach makes the team’s journey more than just a survey activity. Each step in the field is an effort to build a more complete picture of how water is available, moves, and ultimately used by the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Candida reiterated that the team’s presence in Momi Waren is not merely to collect data, but rather to bridge the gap between planning and the reality faced by the community. “Every record regarding the source, pipes, water quality, and changes in discharge during the dry season will form part of the basis for our analysis before determining the most appropriate direction for the clean water supply system,” she emphasized.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2026 ITS Patriot Expedition Team’s journey to Momi Waren continues. Behind every source explored, every pipe examined, and every water sample collected, lies one overarching goal: to create a clean water system that not only flows but also sustainably meets the community’s needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the water source to the homes, the team strives to understand the issue holistically.
