ITS Campus, ITS News\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u2014 To promote a safe driving culture on campus,\u00a0<\/span>the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0held a driving safety training for its academic community. In collaboration with Royal Enfield, the training, titled Smart Riding & Safety Training, took place at the ITS Tower 2 Auditorium on Wednesday (June 3).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

ITS Rector Prof. Dr. (HC) Ir. Bambang Pramujati, ST, MScEng, PhD, highlighted the high number of accidents that still occur frequently on campus. He stated that, as an academic ecosystem, ITS should be a safe place for all road users. “This training is ITS’s effort to increase awareness and improve road safety systems on campus,” Bambang said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding to Bambang’s statement, Abdullah Sahal, Smart Driving Consultant at Royal Enfield, stated that orderly driving can create a sense of safety for road users. As an educational institution, ITS has a moral responsibility to pioneer a safe driving environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

When driving, every driver must pay attention to three crucial aspects: safety, driving skills, and environmentally friendly driving principles. Driving etiquette reflects each driver’s character, so it’s important to always be responsible, patient, and polite. “Therefore, a safe driving culture needs to be a habit for every driver,” he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on the data, Sahal revealed that wise human resources (HR) are a top priority because 93% of traffic accidents are triggered by human factors. Besides human negligence, physical conditions such as fatigue are also a major problem on the road. “Fatigue cannot be anticipated in any way,\u00a0<\/span>so the only way is to sleep,” he stressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides fatigue, driver negligence can also be triggered by the use of devices that distract concentration while driving. Sahal highlighted the phenomenon of drivers frequently dividing their focus between the road and their phone screens to read digital maps. This habit is considered dangerous because it can reduce alertness due to constant eyestrain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a road safety consultant, Sahal emphasizes the importance of using complete personal protective equipment, as every driver faces potential risks on the road. However, personal protective equipment is often overlooked, despite its crucial role in providing primary protection for the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This collaboration between ITS and road safety practitioners is expected to raise awareness among ITS academics about safe and orderly driving. Furthermore, this training also supports the achievement of\u00a0<\/span>the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, specifically point 11 on Sustainable Cities and Settlements and point 17 on Partnerships to Achieve the Goals.\u00a0<\/span>(*)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n
