ITS Campus, ITS News \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>The Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS)<\/a>\u00a0has once again presented an artificial intelligence (AI)\u00a0<\/span>-based<\/span><\/em>\u00a0innovation\u00a0. During the Open Doctoral Promotion Session at\u00a0the ITS Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering (DTSI)<\/a>\u00a0, Dr. Sutrisno ST MT successfully initiated research on\u00a0packaging<\/em>\u00a0optimization using AI technology.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The ITS Physics Engineering<\/span><\/a>\u00a0graduate\u00a0revealed that the manufacturing sector is currently often challenged by time-sensitive packaging development\u00a0<\/span>.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0Dynamic consumer behavior requires companies to constantly innovate to maintain customer satisfaction. “However, there is no standard that can simplify decision-making when developing\u00a0<\/span>packaging<\/span><\/em>\u00a0,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the man familiarly known as Sutrisno also revealed the lack of research correlating\u00a0<\/span>packaging<\/span><\/em>\u00a0, consumer behavior\u00a0<\/span>, manufacturing, and AI. Seeing this gap, he initiated research through his dissertation, entitled “Design for Increasing Packaging Value Based on Artificial Intelligence Models with\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Customer Behavior<\/span><\/em>\u00a0Considerations\u00a0.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In his research, the 1975-born man focused his studies on the food and beverage (F&B) sector. He noted that food and beverage packaging is highly complex, with a wide variety of shapes, sizes, designs, colors, and models. “F&B packaging also has a huge following,” he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

The initial stage of this father of two’s research began with an open-ended questionnaire to determine consumer preferences. The qualitative data obtained was then grouped using NVivo software to identify dominant patterns. This stage continued with a closed-ended questionnaire to obtain more specific results. “This is one way to ensure that the data sources are completely clear from the outset and represent consumer desires,” he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on the data obtained, this Surabaya-based doctor used it as a reference for modeling solutions. He simulated his research with two different industrial scenarios.\u00a0<\/span>The middle-up manufacturing<\/span><\/em>\u00a0scenario and\u00a0<\/span>the middle-low manufacturing<\/span><\/em>\u00a0scenario were used to determine the reliability of the AI-based algorithm used. “I included both so that both could determine the most optimal strategic policy,” he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, Sutrisno’s research successfully produced a mathematical model using the AI-based\u00a0<\/span>Particle Swarm Optimization<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(PSO) algorithm. He successfully achieved a balance between the two scenarios. The\u00a0<\/span>middle-up<\/span><\/em>\u00a0scenario focused on quality and a premium product image, while\u00a0<\/span>the middle-low scenario<\/span><\/em>\u00a0focused on cost efficiency. These findings also provide a strategic solution for manufacturers to understand consumer preferences regarding packaging and optimize profits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through this achievement, Sutrisno’s research strengthens ITS’s contribution to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This achievement covers point 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Manufacturing. This innovation is considered capable of increasing the productivity of the domestic manufacturing sector. “In the future, I want to expand into sectors beyond F&B, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care, and others,” Sutrisno concluded hopefully.\u00a0<\/span>(ITS Public Relations)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
