Surabaya, ITS News \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The Product Design Department (Despro)\u00a0<\/span><\/a>of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is once again conducting Community Service (Abmas) through innovative design training. This time, Abmas targets the Wonosari Kidul Family Empowerment and Welfare Group (PKK) in RT 5 RW 3, aiming to utilize\u00a0<\/span>galvalum<\/span><\/i>\u00a0waste to create jewelry with aesthetic and economic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the researchers, Abmas Faudina Faradilla Nanda, ST, MA, revealed that this activity was the result of a collaboration with PT Sumber Mas Gemilang, a partner providing\u00a0<\/span>galvalum<\/span><\/i>\u00a0waste . Through the Asia Advancing Humanity (ASAH) program, participants were taught how to process the remaining construction materials into brooches with a local touch. “We want\u00a0<\/span>galvalum<\/span><\/em>\u00a0waste not only to be reused but also to have cultural and economic value for the community,” she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the implementation, participants received direct guidance starting from the introduction of materials, the assembly process, and the product decoration stage. Students from\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0ITS Human-Centered Design Despro Laboratory<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0assisted each participant in assembling the brooch components, while participants were given the freedom to add accessories such as sequins and pearls to the\u00a0<\/span>laser-cut\u00a0<\/span><\/i>galvalum<\/em><\/span>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through this training, the community was introduced to the potential of product design innovations based on recycled materials. The ITS DDP demonstrated that\u00a0<\/span>galvalum<\/span><\/em>\u00a0waste can be processed into creative products by leveraging local potential and wisdom. This utilization opens up new opportunities for the community to create works of both aesthetic and economic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) members, this activity provided valuable experience in improving their skills and expanding their household’s economic opportunities. The training is expected to foster creative recycling-based businesses that can increase the economic independence of the surrounding community. “This training provides new insights into how even used goods can be processed into products with economic value,” said one participant.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to strengthening community empowerment, this program also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically point 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure and point 17 on Partnerships to Achieve the Goals. Through synergy between ITS, the community, and the industrial sector, this simple innovation is a concrete step toward design-based sustainable empowerment.\u00a0<\/span>(*)<\/p>\n
