ITS Campus, ITS News \u2014<\/strong> A doctor from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS)<\/a> developed a road damage detection system using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model on an edge device<\/em>. Through her research, Dr Hani\u2019ah Mahmudah ST MT earned her doctoral degree in the S3 study program of the ITS Engineering Physics Department (DTF)<\/a>, recently.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The woman from Tulungagung stated that her research stems from the problem of damaged roads which require long and expensive handling. Through her research, Hani\u2019ah revealed that the underlying urgency of this research is intended to create an automated detection device. “The detection optimization used is based on artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate data retrieval in a timely manner,” she explained.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the still conventional road damage data retrieval in Indonesia, encouraged Hani\u2019ah to develop a fast road damage identification system. With optimization methodology from AI and a combination of high system inference drawing methods, the offered device can detect road damage accurately. “I had done this research before taking the doctoral program,” she added.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, road visual data retrieval uses the assistance of photos or videos assisted by visual sensors to identify road damage such as potholes. The obtained data is then processed with the CNN model through iYOLOv7-TPE-SS so that it can identify objects well. The identification results are then processed on an AI computing platform of the NVIDIA AGX Orin type. The generated output is in the form of road damage data to be followed up for its repair.<\/p>\n

In this research, the woman born on September 16, 1977, projects her research results to not only stop in the academic environment. With the optimization carried out, it can increase the efficiency of road maintenance costs for the government and improve road safety for users. “Not only that, faster and objective road inspections with AI also support the creation of a smart city and the Internet of Vehicles (IoV),” she explained.<\/p>\n

Together with ITS Engineering Physics Professor Prof Dr Ir Aulia Siti Aisjah MT as the promoter, professor from the ITS DTF Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory<\/a> Prof Dr Ir Syamsul Arifin MT, and lecturer of the ITS Civil Engineering Department Dr Catur Arif Prastyanto ST MEng as co-promoters, the hijab-wearing woman not only showed the systematic usefulness of her innovation. But also, extraordinary achievements during her study period.<\/p>\n

During her study period, Hani\u2019ah has successfully published several prestigious scientific papers. Seven out of nine scientific articles were published in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with research fields around machine learning and digital signal processing. Hani\u2019ah desires that the research results she offers can attract relevant partners to develop her innovation optimally.<\/p>\n

This becomes proof of ITS’s commitment to support the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically on point 4 regarding Quality Education; point 9 related to Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; as well as point 11 regarding Sustainable Cities and Communities.
