Tidak hanya menumpuk di daratan, limbah plastik juga mengotori kawasan pesisir dan perairan. Menyikapi hal tersebut, Guru Besar ke-235 <a href=\"http:\/\/its.ac.id\">Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS)<\/a> Prof Dr rer nat Ir Maya Shovitri MSi mencari isolat bakteri dari hutan mangrove Wonorejo, Surabaya yang dapat mendegradasi limbah tersebut.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Profesor dari Departemen Biologi ITS itu mengungkapkan, wilayah perairan Indonesia tidak hanya menjadi habitat berbagai jenis ikan, fitoplankton dan zooplankton, namun juga bagi mikroorganisme. Bakteri menjadi salah satu mikroorganisme yang memiliki metabolisme unik yang dapat mendaur ulang berbagai material organik maupun anorganik. \u201cKemampuan ini menyebabkan bakteri dapat bertahan hidup dalam kondisi ekstrem, salah satunya bertahan di tumpukan limbah plastik,\u201d bebernya.<\/p>\n<p>Berbekal keahliannya dalam bidang mikrobiologi, Maya menekuni riset tentang biodegradasi plastik oleh isolat bakteri sejak tahun 2013. Perempuan kelahiran Kota Malang itu memfokuskan risetnya di wilayah pesisir hutan mangrove Wonorejo, Surabaya yang dikenal sebagai titik akumulasi sedimen dan plastik. \u201cWilayah ini menjadi habitat ideal untuk menemukan bakteri spesifik yang mampu bertahan sekaligus mendegradasi plastik,\u201d jelasnya.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam penelitiannya, alumnus University of Bremen, Jerman tersebut menerapkan berbagai metode untuk mencari isolat bakteri dan mengukur tingkat biodegradasi, yakni mengimitasi proses <em>Winogradsky column, soil burial<\/em>, dan <em>overlying water<\/em>. Hasil riset menemukan bahwa bakteri genus Bacillus, Brevibacillus, Lysinibacillus dan Pseudomonas dapat menghasilkan enzim lipase, alkane hidroksilase dan enzim ligninolitik. \u201cProses ini mampu menurunkan berat kering plastik sebanyak 12 persen selama 16 minggu,\u201d tuturnya.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk memastikan keberlanjutan dalam keilmuannya, penelitian ini dapat dikembangkan pada pemahaman gen-gen yang berperan dalam degradasi plastik, serta faktor abiotik yang mempengaruhi efektivitas kerja enzim pada bakteri tersebut. Menurutnya, semakin sesuai kondisi lingkungan yang diciptakan, semakin tinggi pula tingkat degradasi plastik yang dapat dicapai.<\/p>\n<p>Selaras dengan tujuan tersebut, riset ini tidak hanya memperkaya ilmu dasar tentang biodiversitas mikroorganisme tropis dan molekular, namun juga sejalan dengan upaya pengembangan bioteknologi hijau yang menekankan solusi ramah lingkungan dan berkelanjutan. Hal tersebut turut mendukung pencapaian <em>Sustainable Development Goals<\/em> (SDGs) pada poin ke-12 tentang Konsumsi dan Produksi yang Bertanggung Jawab, poin 14 tentang Ekosistem Lautan, serta poin 15 tentang Ekosistem Daratan.<\/p>\n<p>Melalui berbagai upaya kebermanfaatan penelitian tersebut, Kepala Departemen Biologi ITS periode tahun 2011 &#8211; 2015 tersebut berharap agar penelitiannya dapat dimanfaatkan menjadi produk yang bernilai tambah untuk mendukung ekonomi biosirkular yang menciptakan lingkungan yang sehat dan lestari.
