ITS Campus, ITS News \u2014 <\/b>As a form of support for healthy environmental management, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS)<\/a> inaugurated a Centralized Temporary Storage Facility (TPS) for Toxic and Hazardous Waste (B3) on Friday (25\/7). This initiative is part of the efforts to implement Government Regulation (GR) No. 21 of 2021, which governs spatial planning.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In his opening remarks, ITS Rector Prof. Ir. Bambang Pramujati, ST, MScEng, PhD, explained that the presence of the B3 Waste Treatment Plant is a strategic step by ITS in supporting responsible and sustainable campus environmental management. B3 waste itself is also one of the environmental challenges that cannot be taken lightly. \u201cIf not managed properly, its impact can be significant on human health and environmental sustainability,\u201d he cautioned.<\/p>\n

Therefore, continued the Professor of Mechanical Engineering at ITS, the construction and operation of this new ITS facility embody ITS\u2019s commitment to upholding the principles of good university governance. This commitment extends not only to academic and administrative aspects but also to workplace safety and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

Bambang noted that the ITS Centralized Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility building has also obtained official approval from the Surabaya City Environmental Agency (DLH), as outlined in the Technical Specifications (Rintek) for Hazardous Waste within the campus environment. This facility will be available for use by all units generating hazardous waste within the ITS environment, whether from laboratory activities, research, or campus operations.<\/p>\n

Bambang is optimistic that the existence of this facility will further strengthen ITS’s position as a campus that is not only excellent in technological innovation. \u201cBut it also proves that ITS is responsible for the environment and the future of the next generation,\u201d said the 13th Rector of ITS confidently.<\/p>\n

The management of this Centralized Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility will be under the coordination of the ITS General Affairs, Security, Occupational Health and Safety, and Environment Office (BUK4L), and will collaborate with third parties holding official permits for hazardous waste management. The recording and reporting of waste will also be conducted through an integrated system using Fastronik and directly connected to the Surabaya City Environmental Agency (DLH), ensuring transparency and accountability.<\/p>\n

In her report, Dr. Any Werdhiastutie, ST, MSi, Head of BUK4L ITS, stated that the establishment of the Centralized Hazardous Waste Management Facility at ITS is in line with the provisions of Government Regulation No. 21 of 2021. Therefore, in a single higher education institution like ITS, there must only be one management system for hazardous waste treatment facilities. \u201cBecause until now, each department generating hazardous waste may have had collaborations with third parties,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

According to Any, the establishment of this hazardous waste treatment facility is also one of the requirements for obtaining international accreditation. Therefore, departments within ITS that are planning to undergo international accreditation can state that ITS already has a B3 waste treatment facility to support the evaluation process. \u201cInsha\u2019Allah, starting August 1, 2025, we (the ITS Centralized B3 Waste Treatment Facility, ed.) will be ready to receive waste from the relevant departments,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The establishment of the ITS Centralized Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it supports Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities.
