Prosedur paten penelitian yang rumit dan memakan waktu panjang mungkin menjadi salah satu penyebab sejumlah peneliti ogah mematenkan hasil penelitiannya. Kampus ITS, misalnya, hingga kini tercatat baru mematenkan 34 penelitian. Angka itu masih jauh di bawah kampus Universitas Indonesia, ITB, dan Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB).
