ITS Campus, ITS News — The ability to understand technology is now a crucial need for the younger generation amidst the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). To address this need, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Thematic Community Service (KKN) team held AI coding training for high school students. The training took place at the Programming Laboratory of the ITS Informatics Engineering Department on Wednesday (August 12th).

The head of the ITS Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) team, Dini Adni Navastara, SKom, MSc, explained that AI holds enormous potential for future technological development. Therefore, this massive development needs to be balanced with improving the skills of potential drivers of development in understanding the technology. “This young generation should not only be adept at using it, but also understand how the technology is created and works,” Dini explained.

The lecturer from the ITS Informatics Engineering Department explained that this training generally introduces the concept of machine learning through data processing. Students are introduced to the training process , where a model learns from data to recognize specific characteristics and then automatically generates results. Through this process, students not only see the results but also understand the computational stages involved.

Furthermore, the training, which targeted 40 students from Bangkalan State Senior High School 1, also strengthened their understanding of computational thinking . Dini explained that during the training, students were encouraged to understand the relationship between data as input, processing, and the output generated by the system. “This input-process-output thinking is expected to hone students’ logical skills in systematic  problem-solving ,” she said.

The ITS Informatics Engineering alumnus explained that this training is an extension of a community service program that previously targeted elementary school students. While previously only introducing game programming , the team has now expanded its reach to high school students by providing AI-based programming lessons. This development is expected to be the first step in expanding the program’s reach to the general public.

The training doesn’t stop there; students are also given assignments in the form of projects to work on in groups. The results of these projects are then presented during class. The results will be used as an assessment to gauge students’ understanding of the material presented by determining the best idea and best innovation.

Through collaborative learning, Dini hopes that this Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) will open the eyes of the younger generation to a broader perspective on technology. She stated that this activity also supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 on Quality Education, 10 on Reduced Inequality, and 17 on Partnerships to Achieve the Goals. (*)
