ITS Professor Optimizes Sustainable Multimedia Communication System

ITS Campus, ITS News – The rapid development of communication systems has also increased the need for fast, secure, and reliable communication services. In response to these demands, the 246th Professor of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Prof. Dr. Ir. Suwadi, MT, developed a method capable of optimizing data capacity, adaptive digital image protection, and physical layer security.

The professor from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Intelligent Electrical and Informatics Technology, ITS, explained that multimedia communication systems are a key requirement in today’s era of globalization. These systems involve various types of large data, ranging from text and audio to images and video. Furthermore, as the volume of digital data increases, compression techniques, synchronization, and specialized protocols remain necessary to maintain the quality of these systems.

Based on these challenges, three fields of science were integrated to address the complexity of dynamic data: multimedia information content, transmission technology, and systems development. This integration resulted in an innovation with three capabilities: intelligent compression, content protection, and physical cryptography. “This innovation will build an efficient, secure, and robust multimedia communication system,” said the Gresik native.

More specifically, intelligent compression, as an early innovation, was used to maximize bandwidth efficiency , or the maximum capacity of a communication channel for data transfer. This innovation can reduce the surge in mass multimedia data transmission that often burdens network capacity. Furthermore, this approach can significantly compress data size without compromising the quality of the critical information contained within.

Furthermore, content protection is used to maintain information integrity. This innovation is able to safeguard the authenticity of digital data and documents, crucial assets vulnerable to manipulation and forgery in cyberspace. “With a sophisticated digital encoding and tagging system, this method serves as a copyright protector and ensures the validity of public information,” explained the ITB Master of Electrical Engineering alumnus.

The 246th ITS Professor, Prof. Dr. Ir. Suwadi MT, explained the process of an efficient, safe, and robust multimedia communication system.

Furthermore, according to Suwadi, physical cryptography is used as cutting-edge protection when facing a critical moment in the face of high-level cyberattacks. This innovation leverages the unique characteristics of hardware to create encryption keys that are impossible to duplicate or hack. The application of physical cryptography provides an absolute layer of security for multimedia communication systems and ensures the entire infrastructure is protected from large-scale cyber threats.

Furthermore, these three integrated innovations offer several benefits across various sectors, particularly the government sector. These benefits include transforming the transition from conventional bureaucracy to the era of Smart Government or Electronic-Based Government Systems (SPBE). Furthermore, the resulting impact will guarantee the security and integrity of state data and ensure widespread multimedia connectivity, even in remote areas.

Through this innovation, research requires consistent collaboration across departments, from industry, government, and even other universities. This provides an opportunity for communication systems to be developed, not only in terms of hardware and software and implementation policies, but also through scientific development. “The potential for more secure communication systems remains wide open, so more intensive, ongoing research is needed,” emphasized the Head of the ITS Internal Audit Office (KAI).

Suwadi’s determination aligns with ITS’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The realization of the SDGs in his research refers to point 9 concerning Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
