ITS Campus, ITS News – In order to help prevent further spread of the corona virus or Covid-19 that has become a world pandemic, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) sent units of Disinfection Chambers to the Airlangga University Hospital (RSUA), on Monday (30/3) evening.

These chambers are one of the results of collaborative research between ITS and RSUA with the aim to develop innovations to handle the corona virus that has caused death to thousands of people in the world. The Director of Research and Community Service (DRPM) of ITS, Agus Muhamad Hatta, S.T., M.Si., Ph.D., hopes that this result between their collaboration will help prevent the spread of Covid-19 as well as medical staff in caring for patients with the virus.

Distinctive from the others, these Disinfection Chambers operate using ozone (O3). This method is considered safer compared with the spray method that heavily involves disinfectant chemicals. “In principle, the ozone method only converts oxygen in the air into ozone,” as explained by the ITS lecturer from the Physics Engineering Department.

Ozone belongs to the group of unstable gases, which has been proven to have the ability to kill bacteria and viruses with certain concentrations. After being used, ozone will change again into oxygen in the air. Thus, these Disinfection Chambers only employs oxygen in the air as a raw material.

This ITS lecturer nicknamed Hatta, assures that the system of these Disinfection Chambers takes into account of the ozone concentration being produced inside the chamber so that it is safe for people to use. In addition to that, tests before and after entering each unit were conducted.

The procedure on how to use these Disinfection Chambers is also quite simple. Each person only needs to enter the chamber when the indicator lights show green, and exit when the indicator lights show red. When inside, the user is obliged to spin for ten seconds and to not breathe the surrounding air in order to achieve maximum safety.

Other than RSUA, the ITS Medical Center also received a unit of the Disinfection Chamber for free to aid in the prevention of the spread of Covid-19 throughout the campus environment. In collaboration with RSUA, ITS is also currently developing other innovations, such as robots, portable isolation units, and others.

Hatta emphasized that the Disinfection Chambers made by ITS are not for sale. “But if there are parties who are willing to collaborate in the production of these chambers, ITS will always be open to any parties,” Hatta added. (Sof/Ory/ITS Public Relations)
