Pyrolysis machine to improve the quality of Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) into ready-to-use fuel

Pasuruan, ITS News – Efforts to develop and implement waste processing technology continue in Randupitu Village, Gempol, Pasuruan. Through a community service activity held at the Randupitu Village Hall on Monday (August 10), the Chemistry Department of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) is working to improve the quality of waste processing to produce purer, more usable fuel.

The event, attended by a team of lecturers, educational staff, and students from the ITS Chemistry Department, focused on improving the quality of Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) oil into a usable fuel. This activity demonstrates the application of the ITS Chemistry Department’s science and technology to support waste management and increase the value of the processed products.

This activity also received support from the Randupitu Village Government as well as the administrators and members of the Waste Care Youth Community (PEMPES). Following the opening session, the ITS Chemistry Department team visited the PEMPES Reuse-Reduce-Recycle Waste Disposal Site (TPS 3R) to review the ongoing waste processing process. At the site, the team directly observed the equipment and pyrolysis process used to convert plastic waste into fuel oil.

The review examined several aspects, from the machine’s technical specifications and performance, the pyrolysis process and processing flow, to the quality of the resulting oil. The team also tested and analyzed the conversion results and identified various opportunities to improve the quality of the final product.

The results of the review and analysis were then discussed with the PEMPES 3R Wastewater Treatment Plant (TPS) management. This discussion was crucial in formulating various improvement efforts, both in the processing process and the equipment used. With this evaluation, it is hoped that the implemented technology will operate more optimally and produce better-quality fuel with the potential for direct use.

This activity represents a collaboration between universities, village governments, and the community in finding solutions to waste management issues. Processing waste through pyrolysis technology not only has the potential to reduce plastic waste but also provides added value through its use as fuel.

Through this Community Service activity, the ITS Chemistry Department demonstrates its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly point 7 on Clean and Affordable Energy. It is hoped that the development of waste processing technology in Randupitu Village will continue, so that the PEMPES 3R TPS can become a pilot site for technology-based waste management and community participation that can be developed sustainably.
