ITS Campus, ITS News — The Spektronics Team of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) once again achieved a proud achievement at the AISeries × AISC 2026 event organized by the AIChE UI Student Chapter at the University of Indonesia, last weekend. Through the competition, Spektronics 30 PLN won 1st Runner Up in the Chem-E-Car Competition and Spektronics Project 2.0 became Champion in the Paper and Poster Competition.

Spektronics 30 PLN Team Manager Nayla Muli Fathia explained that her team introduced a magnetic switch sensor innovation aimed at improving the efficiency and accuracy of Spektronics 30 PLN vehicles. This innovation is able to detect the rotation of the magnet in the car’s motion system quickly and accurately so that the vehicle can run straighter and smoother. “This innovation is what improves the performance of Spektronics 30 PLN during racing on the circuit,” said Nayla.

The Bekasi-born student, who didn’t stop at technical development, explained that the team also innovated in catalyst management. The Spektronics team developed a method for reusing catalyst waste as a catalyst for the Chem-E-Car. This allows catalysts that would have previously ended up as single-use waste to be reused, reducing environmental waste disposal.

During the development process, the ITS Chemical Engineering student also revealed several challenges she encountered during preparation for the competition. She stated that the team had tested a catalyst reuse method. The complexity of the trial process and the limited literature available for reference required the team to conduct a series of tests to determine a suitable method.

Meanwhile, a different innovation was also brought through the Spektronics Project 2.0 to become the Champion in the Paper and Poster Competition category. Spektronics 2.0 Team Manager Else Kusuma explained that his team’s innovation focuses on answering challenges in the Crude Palm Oil (CPO) derivative processing industry. The team developed a Machine Learning-based approach and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis to optimize the Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) and water recycling .

Else further emphasized that their innovation’s novelty lies in the integration of the XGBoost surrogate model and NSGA-II optimization. This integration allows for faster determination of operating conditions while maintaining a balance between energy efficiency and waste reduction. “This approach allows for a more efficient optimization process, resulting in faster achievement of optimal operating conditions,” Else explained.

The student from the ITS Instrumentation Engineering Department also expressed her hope that Spektronics would continue to grow and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in point 4 on Quality Education and point 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
