ITS Campus, ITS News — Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) has once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening education and digital literacy in remote areas through the 2025 ITS Product-Based Community Service (Abmas) activity. This time, a team of ITS cross-department lecturers developed a digital educational comic with a digital literacy theme aimed at elementary school (SD) teachers and students.
The community service program that has been implemented in Guluk-Guluk District, Sumenep Regency, Madura is led by Naufan Noordyanto ST MDs, a lecturer at the Department of Visual Communication Design (DKV) , Faculty of Creative Design and Digital Business (FDKBD) ITS . This team also involves interdisciplinary lecturers, namely Sayatman, Yurif Setya Darmawan, and Tedi Mursalat Farqo (DKV), Yurid Eka Nugraha ( Department of Electrical Engineering ), and Maulana Yafie Danendra ( Department of Marine Transportation Engineering ). They collaborated with seven ITS DKV students to design digital comics and various supporting socialization media such as posters, bookmarks, t-shirts, banners, and educational stickers.

According to Naufan, this idea was born from the increasing social problems in the digital space that are starting to affect elementary school-aged children. These include the rise of online gambling, hate speech, misuse of personal data, and the erosion of appreciation for local culture due to unethical digital content. “All of this needs to be addressed early,” he said.
To that end, the ITS team presents five digital educational comic titles that highlight these social issues. These include Judol Bikin Billihan Jebol (preventing online gambling), Karma Komentar Beracun (hate speech online), Lindungi Data Pribadi (digital security), Slander Ulasan Viral (hoaxes and local product promotion), and Lestari Karena Apresiasi (preserving local culture in the digital age).

These five comics were published online through the LINE Webtoon (Canvas) platform and are publicly accessible through the link https://its.id/BacaKomikAbdimanITS . The vertical format allows the comics to be read comfortably on digital devices or projected in the classroom. In addition, the team also developed a Teacher’s Guide titled Using Educational Comic Media , which contains steps for implementing comics in digital literacy learning in elementary schools.
The peak of the community service activities took place on October 11, 2025, at Darissalam Elementary School in Guluk-Guluk District, Sumenep Regency. This activity coincided with the regular meeting of the Guluk-Guluk 02 Teacher Working Group (KKG), which was attended by elementary school supervisors, KKG administrators, and approximately 100 teachers from 13 schools in the area.

During the event, the ITS team not only distributed comics (including printed versions for areas with limited internet access), but also provided interactive training on how to access and use digital comics as teaching aids. In this training, teachers were encouraged to recognize the educational value of each story and practiced sparking critical classroom discussions using comic narratives.
Naufan explained that the Guluk-Guluk District was chosen as the location for the activity for a reason. This area is a rural area with limited access to education and digital infrastructure. “Through one KKG forum, we can reach more than 13 schools and 100 teachers. The educational impact will ripple from teacher to student and from school to community,” Naufan explained.

They found the digital comics to be very helpful in explaining complex digital issues in a simple and engaging way for children. “This community service activity from ITS is truly a breath of fresh air for us,” said Anis Nur Laili, Principal of SDN Bakeyong II, Guluk-Guluk District.
According to Anis, her team has often struggled to find learning media relevant to children’s digital world. This educational comic makes digital literacy learning easier and more enjoyable. The teachers also hope that similar activities can be developed further, including training in creating simple comics so they can adapt learning media to their respective grade levels.
This community service activity embodies the synergy of technology, art, and education, aligning with the direction of the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), specifically the priority of strengthening education, science, technology, and digitalization. Furthermore, this activity supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , including SDG 4 on Quality Education and SDG 10 on Reducing Inequality.
Through this activity, ITS is committed to providing real solutions for the community through an inclusive and sustainable approach. “Digital literacy is not just about technological skills, but also about ethical and social awareness in the digital space,” Naufan concluded.
With the launch of this educational digital comic, Naufan believes that ITS is not only strengthening its role as a socially minded technopreneur campus, but also contributing to the formation of an intelligent, ethical, and cultured young generation, moving towards a Golden Indonesia 2045.
