ITS Campus, ITS News – The Covid-19 pandemic that requires everyone to remain at home while it lasts, actually provides a lot of free time to channel hobbies and make new achievements. Just like Dimas Putra Nanda Waspodo, a student of the Instrumentation Engineering Department of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), who won 1st place in the 2020 Opinion Video Competition organised by the Republic of Indonesia’s National Achievement Center of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Pusat Prestasi Nasional Kemendikbud RI) on the 2nd of May.

Through his video entitled ‘Waktunya Social Distancing’, which translates to ‘It’s Time for Social Distancing’, that has a duration of 59 seconds, this student of the batch 2017 delivered words of encouragement to the citizens of Surabaya in order for them to stay at home. Dimas elaborated that he wants to spread awareness to the people, especially the citizens of Surabaya, to fully cooperate in the implementation of social distancing.

“I hope that the citizens will obey government rules in order to stop the chain and prevent further spread of the Covid-19 virus,” he mentioned.

Even though the video is less than a minute, according to Dimas, the visualization in videography of the money issues caused by the existence of corona has the ability to share interesting information on the effects of social distancing. Starting from the phenomenon of the disappearance of a passenger of an online motorcycle service to the emptiness of main roads which contrasts greatly with Surabaya’s normal condition.

Another attractive point of this video is the delivery of some parts of the narration where the language employed is the particular Javanese language commonly used in Surabaya. It reads, “Ayo rek! Wayahe melok berkontribusi. Gawe awakmu sing gak duwe kepentingan, gak usah kluyuran, cukup nang omah ae. Awakmu wes benkontribusi akeh gawe wong-wong sing berjuang nang garda depan,” which translates to “Let’s go friends! It’s time to contribute. For those of you who doesn’t have anything to do, don’t go anywhere, just stay at home. You have contributed in helping those who are fighting directly in front,”

Dimas Putra Nanda Waspodo, ITS Instrumentation Engineering student, who won 1st place in the video competition held by the National Achievement Center of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) with his video entitled ‘Waktunya Social Distancing’, which translates to ‘It’s Time for Social Distancing’

Dimas added that in choosing the words used in the narration, the process of forming the storyline, until the editing process, he always keeps in mind to consider the perspective of the audience. “That way, it will be easy for them to remember by the eyes, and understood by the soul,” he emphasized.

In order to produce this work in such a short amount of time, Dimas was helped by his three friends who he shares a hobby with, Tyjani Robit, Aprilia Wahyu Novita Ika Saputri, and Priyo Hadi. It is true indeed that since 2018, this group of friends have been producing countless of videography works and participated in many competitions, as seen on their Instagram (@kips.films) and their YouTube channel (KiPS Film).

The videos produced by KiPS Film is very diverse, from a comedy-themed short movie, a one-sided love story entitled ‘Love Comes from Stomach’, until a video without narration that conveys a beautiful perspective with the theme of cinematic aerial at the Bondowoso Forest.

As the fruit of his passion and diligence in studying videography, Dimas successfully obtained numerous awards in the field, such as the title of Best Director of Photography MMTC TV  2018 Festival Film Rotasi, 1st place in the 2018 Short Movie World Education Expo Indonesia Surabaya, as well as 1st place in the 2018 Sidoarjo Festival Film.
