When awarding at the opening ceremony of 24th Surabaya International Jewellery Fair 2019 by East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa at the Hotel Shangri-La Surabaya

ITS Campus, ITS News – achievement boasts an inscribed by one of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) lecturer, Sayatman S.Sn., M.Si. The head of the Departement of Visual Communication Design (DKV) was successfully awarded as an activist of the product packaging design from Surabaya by East Java Governor, Khofifah Indar Parawansa which was handed over at the opening of the 24th Surabaya International event. Jewellery Fair 2019 at Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya, Thursday (17/10).

In the event that was the anniversary of the commemoration of the 74 East Java Province, the surrender of appreciation to five people who to date actively contribute to assist the industry in East Java in various fields. The award includes the pioneer of educational crafts education, the pioneer of natural stone jewelry crafts, industry small-medium enterprises (IKM) export jewelry and accessories industry, product packaging design activist, and the innovative IKM jewelry industry and accessories.

Previously, Sayatman claimed to be informed that he was awarded the activist of the product packaging design from the governor of East Java Province. “From the years of 90’s I often cooperate with the provincial office of East Java in the field of industry and cooperatives to help the IKM in designing their household industrial food products (PIRT),” he explained.

Sayatman revealed, not only active in assisting the IKM, but also businessmen who already have a big market. Sayatman provides counseling, coaching, and training in helping design the logo for PIRT products. That way, IKM in East Java can compete at the national and international levels.

Activities like this have been held regularly every year. Some services in East Java province already have a program with IKM under it because of the number of needs required IKM. One of them is about design, it’s about how to market products with good packaging design, so it needs to help to improve their quality. “Because at ITS there is the department of Visual Communication Design which also aims to do branding. Therefore, they invite us to help improve the design quality, “he explained.

According to Sayatman, there have been many improvements in awareness of the importance of packaging to the enhancement of micro Small and medium enterprises (MSMES) products. The alumni who have been given training, today are already able to compete in the big market. They have improved the packaging design by using safe materials, contain the aesthetic value, and there is information from the product. “In this era of 4.0 industries, packaging can also be a liaison with all information about the product through technology such as barcodes,” added Sayatman.

He hoped, for the future construction of the IKM is done by dividing the first which is still a beginner and which has developed. The scale should be adjusted because the material provided varies. “I do not think with what I give to society so far can be seen and Alhamdulillah appreciated also, I hope such activities do not stop here and UMKM can be more advanced and more competitive again,” said Sayatman.
