ITS Campus, ITS News – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continues to strive to maintain the quality of each study program which can be recognized by many parties, both nationally and internationally. One of them is proven by the achievements of six undergraduate study programs (S1) in ITS which have successfully received general accreditation from the Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (IABEE).
The six study programs include Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding Engineering, Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. The acquisition was followed after the Ocean Engineering study program which had previously succeeded in gaining provisional accreditation from the IABEE a year earlier.
Head of the ITS Materials Engineering Department, Dr Ir Agung Purniawan ST MEng explained that so far IABEE itself has been recognized in Indonesia by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) as the body responsible for the accreditation of study programs that provide academic bachelor’s degrees in engineering and computing.
The international accreditation agency refers to the Washington Accord as one of the international accreditation standards in the field of engineering. IABEE accreditation emphasizes the implementation of outcome-based education. “So as to ensure the fulfillment of the continuous improvement process,” he added.
Then in obtaining international accreditation, explained Agung, each study program is required to adapt learning based on the learning outcomes that have been determined and provided by IABEE. Meanwhile, he gave an example of what was also seen in the accreditation process including Health and Safety (K3), Hygiene, and learning outcomes from the students themselves.
This international accreditation achieved can also be one of the added values of each study program. The reason is, when many outside partners ask about how the learning has been done, this accreditation is proof that the existing quality meets international standardization.
With this accreditation, Agung also expects to be able to make the momentum of improvement in the internal management system of the study program itself. “Later, this will continue to be carried out continuously, not only when it will be accredited,” he said. (sof/herdiana/ITS PR)
