ITS Campus, ITS News – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya continues to make achievements at the international level. It is a student of the ITS Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding Engineering Department who successfully won an international maritime award in The 2019 Ferry Safety and Technology Conference.

The award was a prize for Team Nawasena’s achievements at the 2019 Worldwide Ferry Safety Design Competition in Bangkok, Thailand. The Nawasena team received the award on Thursday (21/2) because they won second place in the design of the ship named Motor Vessel (MV) or the Aquilla Motor Ship.

This event held by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) contests the design of a ferry that is safe to operate on the Pasig River, Manila City, Philippines. Nawasena Team created an innovative design of the MV Aquilla ship under the guidance of Ir Agoes Santoso MSc MPhil CEng and Achmad Baidowi ST MT. Ships designed with this catamaran model are expected to produce higher stability than monohull models.

According to Sasmita Adi Nugraha, head of Nawasena Team, the selection of the ship model was an effort by Nawasena Team to anticipate the possibility of the worst weather in Manila City. The model has also been adapted to the characteristics of the Pasig River. “During a storm, the speed of Pasig River’s flow can reach seven knots, so it requires the right and suitable ship design to be operated safely,” said the 2015 class student.

The MV Aquilla ship is designed to accommodate a minimum of one hundred people with a distance of 12.4 kilometers. The existence of a bridge along the Pasig River with an altitude of eight feet above the river surface had limited the team to design the upper part of the ferry. However, with Anson Novendra Pradana, M Faizur Rijal Azhad, Anwar Sahid, and Muhammad Faishal Ar Rifqy as members, the Nawasena Team successfully completed the MV Aquilla design and resolved the problem. Not only that, the design of the MV Aquilla ship that was worked on for five months since July 2018 also succeeded in occupying the top third position after passing the online selection by WFSA.

Awarding by the World Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) to the ITS Nawasena Team

After awarding ceremony, the Head of Shipbuilding Engineering Department, Dr. Eng M. Badrus Zaman said to ITS Online, this competition is part of ITS’s contribution to the world level for the development of maritime technology. In the context of technology, he added, the safety sector has always been the basis and outcome in its implementation. “The safety sector must be considered since the process of designing the ship and of course the operation as well,” said the doctoral expert in safety.
