Surabaya, ITS News — Visual identity is a crucial element in strengthening a region’s image and attracting public attention. To support this effort, the Community Service Team (Abmas) of the Visual Communication Design (DKV) Department at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) strengthened the visual identity at Kampoeng Dolanan Surabaya on Sunday (October 4).

The head of the ITS Community Service Team, Dr. Rahmatsyam Lakoro, SSn, MT, explained that this initiative stemmed from an assignment in the Social and Cultural Visual Communication Design (DKV) course, which encouraged students to contribute directly to the community. To achieve this, the eight-member community service team created the Kampoeng Dolanan (Dolanan Village) in Surabaya to spark interest in playing among today’s children.

Furthermore, the man familiarly known as Ramok stated that today’s younger generation needs to preserve traditional Indonesian games, which are being eroded by technology. Classic games like stilts, dakon, and bekel are considered enjoyable alternative forms of entertainment. “These efforts need to be supported by adequate facilities, including comfortable spaces for gathering, playing, and interacting,” he said.

As a concrete action, the ITS team revitalized Kampoeng Dolanan by creating murals and painting several facilities. The Head of the Visual Communication Design Department explained that this participatory mural involved local children to foster a sense of ownership of the village’s assets. During the process, the children were encouraged to express their ideas and creativity through the visuals that adorn the village walls.

In addition to the mural, Ramok added, the visual identity was also strengthened to enhance the image of the Kampoeng Dolanan area. This effort included the creation of a logo and graphic standard manual (GSM), as well as improvements to the entrance signage . These steps are expected to make the area’s identity more recognizable to the wider public.

Kampoeng Dolanan founder Mustofa Sam responded enthusiastically to the initiative initiated by the ITS Community Service Team. He described the team’s execution as very neat and creative in beautifying the play area at Kampoeng Dolanan. “We hope the new look at Kampoeng Dolanan will inspire children to keep traditional games alive,” he said.

Thus, this synergy is expected to strengthen the preservation of child-friendly culture and reinforce ITS’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Supported points include point 11 on Sustainable Cities and Settlements and point 17 on Partnerships to Achieve the Goals. (*)
