ITS Campus, ITS News — The need for energy storage continues to grow as renewable energy usage expands. To address this need, a research and development team from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) has introduced the Battery Management Sensor (BMSense) innovation, a smart battery that combines quantum materials with an Internet of Things (IoT) -based monitoring system .
BMSense was developed as an energy storage solution for various renewable energy applications, such as solar power plants (PLTS), energy backup systems, and off-grid energy systems . The product features quantum-based LiPo Graphene material combined with a Battery Management System (BMS), a microcontroller, and sensors to monitor battery condition in real time .
BMSense Research Team Leader Grasianto, SPd, MSc, PhD, explained that the battery development was aimed at addressing several issues with conventional battery technology. “This battery was developed with monitoring needs, energy efficiency, and storage system flexibility in mind,” explained the ITS Chemistry Department lecturer.

From a technological perspective, BMSense has a 3s subshell configuration (part of an atom’s electron configuration) with a nominal voltage of 11.1 volts and a full voltage of 12.6 volts. The monitoring system allows users to monitor the voltage of each cell, current, temperature, and battery condition through a real-time digital system . “This capability provides information on battery condition, so that monitoring of the energy storage system can be carried out more measurably,” explained Grasianto.
According to this doctoral alumnus of Tohoku University, Japan, the development of BMSense also recognizes the potential for implementing energy storage technology in Indonesia. The increasing demand for solar power plants, the electrification of the industrial and commercial sectors, and energy systems in remote areas present opportunities for this product’s development.

The innovation development team involved lecturers from the Departments of Chemistry and Instrumentation Engineering, students from the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at ITS, and PT Jokeen Solusi Teknologi and Jokeen Energy as industrial partners. This cross-sector collaboration is expected to propel BMSense toward implementation and commercialization.
The development of this smart battery also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly point 7, which guarantees access to affordable and sustainable energy. Furthermore, its use in renewable energy systems also aligns with point 9 through the development of technology and innovation that supports energy infrastructure. (ITS Public Relations)
