ITS Campus, ITS News – For people with Upper Limb Deficiency (ULD), putting on shoes can be a challenge. To address this challenge, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) student Abigail Kafrell Wijaya has developed a modular shoe innovation designed to provide a more inclusive and independent user experience.
The student from the ITS Industrial Product Design Department (Despro) explained that this product features a Velcro-based removable shoe concept, operated by pressing the foot on the back of the shoe. It has two components, each with its own function.
The outer layer serves as both a shoe and a protector, while the inner layer, a tabi-style sock (with a separate toe), offers flexibility and comfort. The inner layer is removable and machine washable, making care easy.
Abigail explained that the goal of the innovation, named Authea Shoes, was not merely to create novelty, but to encourage a shift in the world’s perspective on product design. She believes that design shouldn’t just be focused on the majority of users, but also consider the needs of underserved groups. “Innovative products shouldn’t just be new, but address the real needs of people from various backgrounds and abilities,” Abigail emphasized.
The founder of the Authea shoe innovation explained that the product development process faced challenges in turning the concept into a ready-to-wear prototype. He admitted that using elastic knit material required various adjustments, as the required characteristics differ from conventional materials for a straight, fitted shoe. “I believe Authea has room for improvement to make the production process more efficient,” he added.
The girl, who paints in her spare time, also expressed her hope that ITS students would become more courageous in presenting innovations with a broader perspective and supporting the creation of a more inclusive society. This spirit aligns with achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), point 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and point 10 on Reducing Inequality. (ITS Public Relations)
