ITS Campus, ITS News — Waste management continues to be a global concern. As an environmentally conscious institution, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) is promoting waste sorting practices to achieve the ITS Zero Waste 2029 program.
Danar Guruh Pratomo, Head of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Smart Eco Campus Unit at ITS, ST, MT, PhD, explained that this activity aims to strengthen the waste sorting culture at ITS, which has already been implemented. Upholding the principles of reduce , reuse , and recycle , this culture is expected to facilitate waste management.

Attended by representatives from each department head, sub-division head, and representatives from each department at ITS, this activity was expected to gather information regarding progress and existing challenges. However, the lecturer in the ITS Geomatics Engineering Department stated that the discussion results from this activity indicated a lack of individual awareness to participate in the activities.
Therefore, the forum, which was also attended by ITS Rector Prof. Dr. (HC) Ir. Bambang Pramujati, ST, MScEng, PhD, continued to emphasize the importance of self-awareness in waste sorting. “We will continue to improve and evaluate this to support ITS’s success in reducing waste,” Danar explained.

Meanwhile, ITS has taken several steps to support this program, including providing separate trash bins at each location . Furthermore, the concrete trash bins at ITS, which previously hampered the sorting process, have been replaced with standard ones. “And most importantly, we will continue to conduct regular outreach regarding this program,” said the lecturer from the Geomarin Laboratory.
Looking ahead, Danar explained the ITS Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) construction project, which is targeted to begin and be completed in 2026. This project will also contribute to the sustainability of ITS’s independent waste processing process. “This way, ITS can send zero waste to the Temporary Disposal Facility (TPS) by reducing and processing it itself,” he said.
These waste management efforts and steps demonstrate ITS’s concrete support for SDG 12, concerning responsible consumption and production. Danar hopes this outreach will truly instill a culture of waste sorting, leading to ITS achieving Zero Waste by 2029. “We hope all parties can work together to make this initiative a success for a better and more sustainable earth,” he said.
