ITS Campus, ITS News — The Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) held a Roundtable Discussion on Industrial Revitalization as an effort to strengthen the manufacturing industry in Indonesia. The event, which brought together government officials, businesspeople, and academics, was held at the Auditorium of the ITS Interdisciplinary School of Management and Technology (SIMT) on Thursday (March 5).

Dr. Setia Diarta, Director General of the Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry (ILMATE) at the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, stated that the domestic industry currently faces major challenges in five critical areas. Raw materials, market competition, energy costs, regulations, and human resources (HR) and innovation are the main obstacles. “We can expand the industrial sector from assembly to providing our own components,” he said.

Furthermore, Setia explained the New National Industrialization Strategy (SBIN) initiated by the Directorate General of ILMATE. The main strategy includes strengthening industrial structures and downstreaming, increasing component and supply chain independence, and mastering technology and innovation. It also focuses on developing human resources and industrial competencies, increasing access to financing, investment, and markets, as well as strengthening institutions, regulations, and green industries.

Meanwhile, Senior Executive Vice President of Management Transformation at PT PAL Indonesia, Rear Admiral (Ret.) AR Agus Santoso, also shared his perspective from an industry perspective. To support industrialization, the maritime shipyard company is focusing on procuring materials and equipment, prioritizing local products.

PT Barata Indonesia Director Hertyoso Nursasongko ST MEngSc also explained his company’s strategy. Possible maneuvers include strengthening the industrial ecosystem, developing high-tech manufacturing, and strengthening the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) policy. This is an effort to strengthen domestic manufacturing.

From another perspective, Dr. Ir. Arman Hakim Nasution, MEng., a researcher and Head of the ITS Center for Industrial Development and Public Policy Studies (PIKP), shared his views as an academic. He believes that industrialization is inseparable from innovation. By involving universities, innovation can be accelerated to support industrial transformation. “Innovation and concepts are in collaboration with universities, but execution and funding are handled by the government,” explained the lecturer in the ITS Business Management Department .

Through this event, ITS consistently demonstrates its support for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including point 9 on Infrastructure, Industry, and Innovation and point 17 on Partnerships to Achieve the Goals. This ITS-facilitated discussion is expected to produce concrete policies and strategies to further strengthen the Indonesian industry. (ITS Public Relations)
