ITS Campus, ITS News  —  The Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) , through the Department of Business Management, has once again graduated one of its outstanding students. Unlike other students, Bima Surya Samudra is the only graduate to graduate without a thesis but through a recognized publication, as ITS did in 2020.

In his speech, Bima shared that he had been working on the research, ” The Use of Generative AI in the Workplace: Driving Factors, Barriers, and Benefits, ” for less than two years. The research, indexed by Scopus at the IEEE TEMSCON ASPAC 2024 international conference, also earned Bima a place as a graduate at the upcoming 132nd ITS Commencement Ceremony.

In his story, Bima revealed that this research was conducted as an effort to explore the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI). He explained that the adoption of artificial intelligence is increasingly widespread and is being utilized to support productivity, efficiency, and decision-making in the workplace. However, Bima believes that the use of Gen AI in Indonesia still requires a deeper understanding.

To address this issue, the bespectacled man conducted a study to investigate the potential use of Gen AI in the workplace using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) method. The survey was conducted online and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The study collected data from 150 respondents from various sectors, including private companies, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), regional-owned enterprises (BUMD), multinational corporations, and government agencies.

Based on his research, Bima explained that performance expectations and facility conditions significantly drive Gen AI adoption. Business performance, on the other hand, plays a less significant role, and social influence has a moderate effect. Data analysis using PLS-SEM showed that 58.4 percent of the variance in usage intention can be explained by the four UTAUT constructs.

Furthermore, Bima also conveyed the significant potential of his research in providing practical and applicable recommendations for stakeholders, particularly in the manufacturing and service sectors. He hopes his findings can serve as a basis for formulating strategic steps to optimize collaboration between humans and technology. “This strategic formulation is crucial for navigating the unavoidable dynamics of digital transformation,” he emphasized.

Behind this achievement, Bima explained the long struggle he went through as the first author of the publication. Bima acknowledged that the process of compiling this scientific publication was full of challenges, both technically and academically. However, he overcame these obstacles thanks to the intensive guidance of his two supervisors: ITS Vice Rector III Imam Baihaqi, ST, MSc, PhD, and ITS Business Management Department lecturer Fadila Isnaini, SM, MT.

Through this achievement, the only son of Indrarian Polii, SH, MH, and Sri Wahyuning Illahi, SE, proved that ambition, perseverance, and ability can lead to success. He emphasized that what matters most is not the final form of the final project, but the tangible impact the research generates. “For me, it’s not about whether I graduate with a thesis, but rather how the results can provide tangible benefits to many people,” Bima said.

The achievements of the 2021 class reflect their significant contributions to the nation’s research world. Furthermore, this achievement represents concrete steps toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), point four, on quality education, and point nine, on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. (ITS Public Relations)
