The 219th ITS Professor, Prof. Dr. Wiwik Anggraeni SSi MKom, presented her scientific oration on predictive analysis at the Open Session for the Inauguration of ITS Professors

ITS Campus, ITS News — Data is an asset and the main foundation in determining strategies for the future. However, the various sources and types of data make processing complex and less than optimal. To solve this problem, the 219th Professor of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Prof. Dr. Wiwik Anggraeni SSi MKom initiated the application of predictive analysis to plan strategic decisions.

Wiwik explained that predictive analysis uses various approaches to predict patterns of a trend based on historical data. “This technique utilizes complex data sets or big data to then be processed into a decision,” explained the professor from the ITS Information Systems Department .

Regarding big data, Wiwik added, there are five main characteristics that can be reflected from the data. Some of these characteristics describe the size, speed, diversity, reliability, and benefits of the existing data. Not only that, big data also raises challenges in managing the data. “For example, how to store data properly and the analysis needed to interpret it,” explained the mother of three.

The Head of the ITS Information Systems Department came up with innovation by collaborating the approach with artificial intelligence ( AI). Some of the innovations include combining AI and machine learning , developing real-time data processing , and increasing transparency in data management with Explainable AI (XAI). “In addition, there is also an AutoML breakthrough that allows AI to do everything automatically,” said the woman from Madiun.

The e-Jatim Sehat application, the result of Prof. Dr. Wiwik Anggraeni SSi MKom’s work as an anticipation of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DBD) which was developed through predictive analysis.

The innovation utilizes AI to analyze unstructured data from text, images, and videos. Not only that, this innovation also increases model accuracy and reduces errors in forecasting. For example, Wiwik applies it to estimate strategies to overcome the spread of Dengue Fever (DBD). “This predictive analysis analyzes environmental conditions and internet data searches from Google Trends and social media,” he explained.

Predictive analysis also has the ability to forecast economic trends and market changes. Specifically, this approach estimates commodity prices, inflation, and financial risks based on historical data. Then, the data is analyzed and processed to design policies regarding subsidy allocation and others. “So, this method can increase economic resilience and market stability,” added the ITS Mathematics Department S1 alumnus .

Not only the health and economic sectors, this analysis is also useful for improving the efficiency of public services, national security, traffic system planning, disaster management, and others. Wiwik believes that Indonesia can have higher competitiveness and be resilient to global challenges if all levels of society utilize predictive analysis.

Therefore, she wants all aspects of society to be able to apply the analysis well. This woman who wears the hijab believes that a strong nation is a nation that is able to respond to change quickly and excel sustainably. “Hopefully, Indonesia can remain relevant, adaptive, and competitive in the digital era,” she concluded.

This research shows ITS’s contribution in realizing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 3 regarding healthy and prosperous life. It is hoped that this research can encourage an integrated database system to support people’s lives.
