Shibaura Institute of Technology, March 2025<\/em> \u2013 A total of 39 mathematics students from Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) recently completed the Global Project-Based Learning on Mathematical Sciences<\/em> event, held from March 2 to 10, 2025. The event aimed to develop students’ ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-world challenges through two exciting optimization-focused projects.<\/p>\n

Project 1: Optimize Your Open Box from a Cardboard<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the first project, students were guided by Prof. Zhai<\/a> to develop optimization solutions for creating an open box from a piece of cardboard. Each group was provided with a piece of cardboard and tools to create an open box, with the primary goal of either optimizing the box’s volume or minimizing material waste. Students were required to conduct theoretical analysis, formulate a calculation procedure to optimize the box design, and ultimately present their handmade boxes with the optimized dimensions.<\/p>\n

This project provided valuable insights into how mathematical theory can be applied to everyday life, particularly in optimizing resource usage.<\/p>\n

Project 2: Design Optimization Formulation<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the second project, led by Prof. Subchan<\/a>, students explored Design Optimization Formulation<\/em>, a systematic approach to improving engineering designs by maximizing performance while satisfying constraints. Each group was assigned a real-world problem and asked to formulate a mathematical model that would optimize the design. They had to define the objective function, identify design variables, and incorporate relevant constraints to ensure a feasible solution.<\/p>\n

This project highlighted the importance of mathematical modeling in solving engineering problems and how optimization can be applied to create more efficient and effective solutions.<\/p>\n

Cultural Activity: Yukata Workshop \u2013 A Fantastic Experience for Students<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to the academic projects, the event also included a cultural activity that proved to be a highlight for the students \u2013 a Yukata workshop! Students had the opportunity to learn about and experience traditional Japanese culture by wearing Yukata, a form of light kimono typically worn during summer festivals. The workshop was a fantastic and enriching experience, as students not only gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture but also had fun trying on the beautiful garments. This cultural activity added a unique and memorable dimension to the event, allowing students to connect with Japan beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n

Enjoyable International Collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n

The event not only provided academic challenges but also strengthened the relationship between students from two different countries. They learned to work in cross-cultural teams, shared knowledge, and developed innovative solutions for the assigned problems. Additionally, students gained practical skills in solving mathematical problems that can be directly applied in industrial and engineering fields.<\/p>\n

At the end of the event, each group presented their findings and optimization models, which were enthusiastically received by the supervising professors and fellow participants. As the event concluded, students left not only with enhanced mathematical skills but also with a deeper understanding of how mathematics can be applied in real-world scenarios.<\/p>\n

Looking Toward the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Global Project-Based Learning on Mathematical Sciences<\/em> event serves as a testament to the importance of international collaboration in enriching students’ learning experiences. It also underscores the crucial role of mathematics in addressing global challenges. Going forward, it is hoped that such activities will be held more frequently to hone academic skills and enhance knowledge exchange among universities from different countries<\/p>\n
