Cahaya matahari yang membuat bumi terang benderang adalah gelombang elektromagnetik. Bolam dan lampu neon yang membuat rumah, taman dan jalan terang di malam hari adalah fenomena elektromagnetik. Radio dan atau televisi yang hampir spasti ada di setiap rumah bahkan hingga pelosok juga merupakan peralatan yang bekerja berdasar gelombang elektromagnetik. Demikian pula peralatan-peralatan yang ada di laboratoium sekolah seperti osiloskop maupun di rumah sakit seperti foto sinar-x merupakan peralatan ysng memanfaatkan medan listrik dan magnet.<br \/>\nMedan elektromagnetik menjadi salah satu mata kuliah wajib departemen fisika, dan muncul dalam dua semester. Untuk semester awal ditinjau medan elektromagnetik dalam ruang bebas yakni ruang tanpa bahan selain udara yang secara umum dalam konteks ini dapat dipandang ruang hampa. Pembahasan ini dipilih dengan alas an menghindari kerumitan yang ditimbulkan oleh kehadiran bahan sebagai medium medan dan gelombang elektromagnetik.<br \/>\nPembahasan dimulai dengan Analisa Vektor sebagai perangkat matematik dasarnya, khususnya teorema Gauss, teorema Stokes dan teorema Green serta system koordinat silinder maupun bola. Pembahasan dilanjutkan tentang Sejarah ringkas fenomena listrik disusul dengan hukum Cuolomb bagi gaya antara dua atau lebih muatan listrik titik di dalam ruang bebas. Dari gaya Coulomb ini dikembangkan konsep medan listrik dari muatan titik. Menggunakan prinsip superposisi, medan listrik dikembangkan bagi muatan listrik berbentuk kawat, pelat maupun pejal. Untuk bentuk muatan listrik yang simetri tertentu cukup efektif jika diterapkan hukum Gauss. Akhirnya, diperkenalkan potensial dan energi potensial listrik dari muatan titik maupun perluasannya dalam bentuk kawat, pelat maupun pejal.<br \/>\nPotensial listrik dikaji lebih lanjut dengan teknik matematik khusus, di antaranya ekspansi multipol dan metoda bayangan. Sebelumnya diberikan terlebih dahulu teorema keunikan bagi potensial Listrik. Metoda separasi variabel bagi system dengan simetri tertentu dan terbatas dalam system koordinat Cartesian, koordinat Bola dan koordinat Silinder.<br \/>\nPembahasan dilanjutkan tentang bahan magnet yang menghasilkan medan yang berbeda dari medan listrik. Medan magnet ini menyebabkan gaya yang dikenal sebagai gaya Lorentz pada benda bermuatan Listrik yang bergerak. Gaya yang dialami kawat yang dialiri arus Listrik dan hukum Biot-Savart diuraikan dengan lengkap. Fenomena arus listrik yang menghasilkan medan magnet dirumuskan dalam hukum Ampere. Divergensi dan curl medan magnet dijabarkan. Terakhir dibahas potensial vector dan momen dipole magnetic.<br \/>\nBab terakhir buku ini membahas elektrodinamika, dimulai dari gaya gerak Listrik, hukum Ohm, dan hukum induksi Faraday. Pembahasan dilanjutkan tentang inkonsistensi empat persamaan elektromagnetik dan Solusi yang diberikan oleh Maxwell. Empat persamaan yang konsisten ini disebut sebagai persamaan Maxwell dan salah satu solusinya adalah gelombang datar elektromagnetik dengan kecepatan yang dikenal sebagai kecepatan Cahaya. Secara spesifik dibahas pula sifat perambatan energi dan momentum dari medan elektromagnetik.
