Pengolahan primer dapat menyisihkan partikel sekitar 60% dari total padatan tersuspensi dan sekitar 35% BOD; pengotor yang terlarut tidak dihilangkan. Pengolahan sekunder dapat menghilangkan lebih dari 85% padatan tersuspensi dan BOD. Sedangkan pengolahan tersier dapat mengolah hampir semua kotoran dari air limbah sekitar 99% dengan kualitas mendekati seperti air minum.
