Surabaya, IT Journalistic — The Department of Information Technology (DTI), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), conducted a community service program (Abmas) by developing a digital learning system based on the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) at MI As-Sunnah An-Nabawiyyah in Blitar City. Led by Dr. Rizka Wakhidatus Sholikah, the program aims to provide students with a more affordable and flexible alternative learning resource. One of the activities included an e-learning training session held on Saturday (July 11, 2026).

The program was initiated in response to the high cost of procuring textbooks, which can place an additional financial burden on students’ parents, particularly those from lower- and middle-income families. To address this issue, the DTI ITS team developed and customized the open-source Moodle LMS. The system provides integrated features for managing digital learning materials, assignments, quizzes, and assessments on a single platform, allowing students to access learning materials online through internet-connected devices.

The program was carried out in five stages: needs analysis, system development and implementation, system testing, training and assistance, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The school was actively involved in the process, with the IT administrator and teachers participating in system testing. The team also provided LMS management training for the IT administrator and training on the use of learning features for teachers. DTI ITS students contributed to system development, the preparation of user manuals, and the delivery of training sessions for users.

The implementation results show that the LMS has been adopted by 100 percent of students and teachers at MI As-Sunnah An-Nabawiyyah. Its use extends beyond the distribution of digital learning materials to include assessments, grade management, student attendance monitoring, and the preparation of monthly student progress reports. The Head of the MI As-Sunnah An-Nabawiyyah Foundation, Prof. Dr. Wahidul Anam, M.Ag., expressed his appreciation for the implementation of the LMS, noting that it helps integrate the school’s learning processes and academic administration.

Following the completion of the program, the LMS can now be independently managed and operated by the IT administrator and teachers. Looking ahead, there is potential for further development through feature optimization and interface improvements on the student side to make the system more engaging and user-friendly. Through the continued use of this system, the school is expected to improve the quality of learning while fostering greater independence in managing educational technology.

Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals

The community service program conducted by DTI ITS contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education, through the provision of a digital learning system that facilitates students’ access to learning materials, participation in assessments, and engagement in a more flexible and structured learning process.
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, through the provision of more affordable alternative learning resources to help reduce dependence on physical textbooks, particularly for families from lower- and middle-income backgrounds.

These contributions reflect DTI ITS’s efforts to improve access to learning resources and promote the use of technology in education. Meanwhile, further feature optimization and LMS interface improvements remain potential areas for development to enhance user experience and ensure the system’s sustainable use at the school.
