Surabaya, IT Journalistic — The Department of Information Technology (DTI) at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) served as a venue for knowledge exchange through an academic forum with international students on Tuesday (Oct. 13). During the forum, which was also attended by DTI faculty members, Adam Mzabi from France presented a progress report on his internship in the field of cybersecurity, while Issabelle Lee Lucian from Malaysia introduced herself and outlined her research plan on artificial intelligence for application in smart agriculture.

Adam presented the progress of his work over the past two weeks, which focused on analyzing network activity data and security alerts. He studied the information generated by Suricata, a network security monitoring tool, and reviewed the testing rules used.

As part of his work, Adam developed a data processing workflow using Python to link security alerts with related network activity. He also analyzed the CIC-IDS2017 network security dataset and identified data characteristics to be used as the basis for model development.

This progress resulted in a tested data-linking workflow and defined the next steps: validating the data characteristics before proceeding to the model training phase. This activity is part of Adam’s professional development in processing and analyzing data to support cybersecurity studies.

Meanwhile, Issabelle Lee Lucian introduced herself and outlined the research direction she intends to pursue during her time at DTI ITS. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) and its application in smart farming.

Issabelle Lee Lucian research plan opens up opportunities to explore the use of AI to support agricultural activities through data processing and decision-making support. This research direction is relevant to the need for productive, efficient, and sustainable agricultural development.

The presence of DTI faculty members at the forum brought together the plans and experiences of international students with the department’s academic environment.

Presentations on internship progress and research plans provided an opportunity to share knowledge and identify areas of study that can be further developed.

The involvement of students from France and Malaysia also added an international dimension to learning activities at DTI ITS. This meeting opened opportunities to expand academic networks and build collaborations through internships and research.

Through discussions on cybersecurity and AI for smart agriculture, the forum highlighted the interconnection between information technology and the needs of various sectors. Competency development and research plans are part of the effort to link academic learning with the challenges faced by society.

Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals

This activity is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education, through internship-based learning, reporting on activity progress, and knowledge exchange between international students and DTI ITS faculty members.
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, through the development of network security data analysis and AI research plans relevant to technological innovation needs and the strengthening of digital systems.
  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger, through AI research focused on smart farming that has the potential to support productive and sustainable agriculture.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through the involvement of students from France and Malaysia in the DTI ITS academic environment, which opens opportunities for knowledge exchange and cross-border collaboration.
