Surabaya, IT Journalistic — A total of 40 graduates from the Department of Information Technology (DTI) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) celebrated the successful completion of their higher education during the 134th Graduation Celebration on Sunday (October 11). Held at the 2nd Floor Auditorium of ITS Tower 2, the Hollywood-themed celebration served as an opportunity to recognize the graduates’ academic journeys while highlighting the competencies and innovations they developed throughout their university years.

Of the 40 graduates, 25 earned the Very Satisfactory distinction, 12 graduated cum laude, and three achieved magna cum laude honors. The average study duration for graduates in the 134th graduation period was 8.08 semesters, equivalent to approximately four years. These figures provide an overview of the graduates’ academic achievements and the time they spent completing their higher education at DTI ITS.

The Hollywood theme was chosen to place the graduates in the spotlight as the stars of their graduation celebration. Much like the leading characters in a film, each graduate was recognized for the dedication, experiences, and achievements that shaped their academic journey.

Among those recognized was Muhammad Harvian Dito S.A., who achieved the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) among DTI ITS graduates in the 134th graduation period. With a GPA of 3.84 and magna cum laude honors, Dito received the Best GPA Award, accompanied by a certificate and a star-shaped plaque. Beyond his academic achievement, he developed a final-year project involving a chatbot powered by multi-agent artificial intelligence (AI) and agentic retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for PUSPAGA Kota Probolinggo.

For Dito, learning extended beyond the classroom. He emphasized the importance of developing skills independently through personal projects, faculty-led projects, community involvement, and competitions. These experiences provided opportunities to explore new knowledge and expand his competencies in information technology.

Beyond academic achievements, organizational involvement and entrepreneurship also played significant roles in the graduates university experiences. Iiki Adfi Nur Mohamad, for instance, served as the Chair of ITS TV in 2025 after previously gaining experience in branding and marketing. He also established Ini Karya Kita, a branding agency and software house that grew from his interest in the creative industry.

His entrepreneurial experience was closely connected to his academic studies. For his final-year project, Adfi explored IT governance using the COBIT 2019 framework, which he subsequently applied to managing his business. His experience illustrates how knowledge acquired through higher education can be developed and applied to entrepreneurial activities.

Another example of applying information technology across different fields comes from M. Januar Eko Wicaksono. For his final-year project, Januar developed an automated drone delivery system incorporating waypoint planning and precision landing technologies, integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) devices and a web-based system.

Beyond his final-year project, Januar collaborated with students from other disciplines to develop Smartbiome, a system designed to support real-time monitoring of milkfish ponds. His involvement demonstrates how information technology competencies can be applied through interdisciplinary collaboration to address challenges in the fisheries sector.

Beyond developing academic competencies and technological innovations, several DTI ITS graduates have also begun contributing to the professional world. Based on publicly available professional information, at least six graduates from the 134th graduation period have been identified as currently employed. Meanwhile, entrepreneurial experiences, such as those of Iki Adfi Nur Mohamad, further demonstrate opportunities to apply information technology competencies beyond the academic environment.

These achievements highlight the diverse ways graduates developed their competencies through academic learning, organizational activities, entrepreneurship, and technology-based solutions.

Meanwhile, the 134th Graduation Celebration began with a procession outside ITS Tower 2. Wearing graduation gowns, medals, and ceremonial sashes, the graduates made their way toward the auditorium, welcomed by applause from fellow students.

DTI ITS graduates take part in a procession toward ITS Tower 2 as part of the 134th Graduation Celebration.

For Fazrul, one of the graduates, the procession was among the activities that contributed most to the celebratory atmosphere. “The procession is one of the biggest contributors to the excitement of graduation,” he said. Nevertheless, he also emphasized the need for appropriate regulations to ensure that the tradition remains orderly and peaceful.

The celebration continued with remarks from Hazwan Adhikara Nasution, Chair of the DTI Student Association; a representative of the graduates’ parents; a faculty representative; and Dr. Ir. Raden Venantius Hari Ginardi, M.Sc., Head of the Department of Information Technology.

Following the remarks, the Head of the Department and Dimas Anton Asfani, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Vice Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Informatics (FTEIC), performed the traditional tumpeng-cutting ceremony as a symbol of gratitude.

The celebration also featured messages from alumni and students, poetry readings, and a retrospective video highlighting memorable moments from the graduates’ university years. A musical performance by BandIT and an interactive “Best of Five” icebreaker session added energy to the event before it concluded with a group photo session, closing remarks from the emcee, and a feedback session.

Reflecting the Hollywood theme, graduation marked not the final scene but the beginning of a new story. Equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained throughout their university years, DTI ITS graduates now have opportunities to continue learning, pursue their aspirations, and contribute to various fields through the application of information technology.

Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This celebration also supports the broader objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education, by recognizing the academic achievements of 40 DTI ITS graduates, including 15 who graduated with cum laude and magna cum laude honors, as well as highlighting the development of information technology competencies through final-year projects, research, and learning experiences beyond the classroom.
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by highlighting the development of skills relevant to professional careers, alongside the graduates’ entrepreneurial experiences and technological innovations that have the potential to support productive activities across various sectors.
