Surabaya, FT-EIC ITS – A desire to keep developing skills in the field of data analysis drove Muhammad Trinanda Thoriq, a student of Information Systems at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya, to take part in the Data Mining Competition at the Explore.AH Big Event Informatika. In this competition, he participated together with two fellow students from the same department, namely Raden Muhammad Raissa Wirabuwana and Muhammad Rasyid Bomantoro Setya Putra, to process, analyze, and present findings from the dataset given by the committee.

Thoriq’s interest in joining this competition began with a strong interest in the field of data. According to him, besides being a platform to sharpen technical skills in data processing and analysis, this competition also provided an opportunity to learn how to work together as a team. “For me, the experience of collaborating with team members was an added value no less important than the final result of the competition,” he said.

The preparation carried out before the competition began was started with a brainstorming session together with Raissa and Rasyid. They discussed to determine the analytical approach that would be used and prepared the appropriate methods. After the committee shared the dataset, the team started by determining the theme and objective of the analysis, then explored the data to find patterns or interesting information that could be developed into analysis results and a report.

During the competition, the biggest challenge the team faced was managing time for discussions while also dividing tasks among team members. In addition, determining the main findings most relevant to analyze also required a lot of consideration. To overcome this, they divided tasks clearly, arranged a discussion schedule, and routinely evaluated the analysis results that had been obtained. With good communication, every member, whether Thoriq, Raissa, or Rasyid, was able to contribute according to their role.

“What I learned most from this competition is that good results are always born from open communication and a clear division of tasks from the start,” said Thoriq.

Through this competition, Thoriq gained a lot of valuable experience, especially regarding the importance of preparation, communication, and teamwork. He realized that success in a competition is determined not only by individual ability, but also by good coordination and the active contribution of every team member in achieving a shared goal.

Participation in the Explore.AH Big Event Informatika also brought a proud result. Together with his team, namely Muhammad Trinanda Thoriq, Raden Muhammad Raissa Wirabuwana, and Muhammad Rasyid Bomantoro Setya Putra, they succeeded in winning 2nd Place in the Data Mining Competition, while also bringing honor to the name of Information Systems ITS at this national-level event. This achievement serves as motivation for them to keep learning, improve skills in the field of data analysis, and be more confident in facing upcoming competitions.

Looking ahead, Thoriq hopes to take part in more competitions as a means to gain more experience, broaden horizons, and develop skills in the field of data. He also wants to invite other students, especially from Information Systems ITS, to not hesitate to try various competitions. “Make every competition an opportunity to learn, develop personal potential, and build valuable experience. With good preparation, hard work, and an unyielding spirit, every experience will become a valuable step toward greater achievements,” he concluded.
